This is precisely what I've been wanting for sometime now. I was ready to plunk down $300 for a 770 years ago, but didn't need yet another gadget in addition to my phone. I was waiting for Nokia to add a voice module. With the sucessful launch of Android, it was just a matter of time before they got with the program. I suspect that there's going to be even more refinements for the UI to make it more mainstream/less "Linuxy", but having this as a phone option moves this solidly out of the niche already carved out by the previous tablets.

Now I just need to wait for my E63 to wear out... ☚ī¸ But on the plus side, by next year (at the earliest, realistically), there should be an even more improved model available!

How do you even pronounce Maemo???
So this thing doubles as a phone also? I thought it was just an web browsing device? I like that it has Adobe Flash! Really the only thing Nokia messed up on is the lack of 850/1900 3G.

Hey, Nokia has released plenty of 3G devices with 850/1900. This is the first 3G smartphone that it has made that my fellow T-Mobile customers and I can actually use.

However, it is interesting that high profile smartphones based on Linux seem to be favoring T-Mobile for the time being.

I say "MAY-moe", which is, I think, correct. I've seen a few videos from the "NOKE-ee-uh" folks that pronounce it sorta like "MY-moe", but I think that's just a bit of the Finnish accent.

Quadband GSM/EDGE + Euro/T-Mobile 3G + Wifi! Whoo hoo!

It's not exactly an iPhone Killer (remember when people were still using that phrase in an optimistic and totally non-ironic manner?), but the N900's got enough of the features necessary to put it ahead of the iPhone in the opinion of a lot of folks, including me.

I'll be...

The G1 and MyTouch3g all beat the iphone3g in a recent product test at PCworld.com. The 3gs was only 1 point in from of the G1 and MyTouch, and it was in styling, NOT performance! The G1 and MyTouch both received 97s in performance! BooYAA 🙂

Actually they did a good thing by getting it on the T-Mobile USA network since it uses 1900MHZ GSM/EDGE and 1700 3G/UMTS. You can use Voice and Data at the same time which is cool if you want to browse the web or Skype and receive calls. 🙂

I've been checking this out at the Meamo's N900 website, and this thing really is a "PC-like" experience!

?IF? Tmo were to pick this up I'll leave ATT for this. I just hope somebody comes up with an app for Maemo 5 that lets me use the built-in wifi as a hotspot so I can use my laptop with it. Just as I do with my Nokia N95 with JoikuSpot.

But I suspect that if Tmo were to come out with this it probably won't be til Spring next year. Just a guess though.

Anyway, check this out:

It's still not quite as slick as a true desktop, but it's pretty close. The N800 & N810 are basically the laptops of 5 or 6 years ago stuffed into [large] phone-sized packages running Linux. The N900 will be a marginal step toward a more desktop like UI, and it will have a phone in it!

Since the N900 has 1700 3G can you imagine Tmo USA picking it up? Seems to me to be too good for the U.S. market.

They're the only carrier that uses 1700 3G, so that's as clear an indication as any. Between the Android phones & this, T Mo is going to have a kick ass lineup next year.

Yeah, just to me it seems too good to be true for the U.S. market. But if Tmo were to pick it up then heck yeah I'll swhtch over!

I just hope someone comes out with an app to use the N900 as a hotspot just as I do with my Nokia N95 with JoikuSpot.

Hey japhy, I thought you might be interested in this video, it's Nokia person for Maemo, it's very interesting, such things come up as to AT&T 3G (NOTHING exciting to report there), the question as to ?WHY? the battery has less capacity in the N900 than the N97, that's another good question that comes up, and some of the differences between Symbian and Maemo also come up in this interview, this is a very good interview. Though I gotta warn you, this is a 31 minute interview, so watch it when you have some time to spare. Enjoy!

At least in it's current form. Maemo will never be ported to simple phones like the E51 (it's a desktop OS!), so they'll probably do something to renew or directly replace it. I could easily see them totally dropping 5th edition & going with Maemo in whatever comes after the current batch of touchscreen phones.

There's going to be something for smartphones, but S60 as we know it is not long for this world.
