If they had made this a Maemo based device, especially a convertible tablet netbook, instead of a conventional netbook ... I would be ALL over this. Better than waiting for the Apple 10" tablet rumors to pan out.

But ... WINDOWS???? F that.

Maemo is not only the most fun operating system to say aloud (closely followed by "Ubuntu"), but what they've done with the internet tablets is one of those possible future directions of technology, and just flat out cool. If there was any chance of a Maemo (MaemoMaemoMaemo!) tablet/laptop with a phone built in coming out, I'd be all over that.

But yeah, another Windows netbook is ho-hum^10.

Most netbooks and laptops that are coming out are fully capable of running Ubuntu or any other flavor of linux for that matter. Nokia has also had a history of supporting linux, which means you can buy it, wipe the hard drive, and install Ubuntu or Hacintosh OS X.

The hardware is what is really important here.

Nokia is simply playing it safe with this first entry. It is using this to see how viable the market is, so it went with the OS that is most recognizable to the largest population. If it proves successful enough, I'm sure we'll see Maemo netbooks from Nokia in the future (although with Nokia, who knows how long that will be).

Nokia has already tried to carve out a niche with the Internet Tablet, and despite putting very little effort into it, they came away with a small but rabid following.

The laptop is a logical extension of that market creep, but the fact that they went the safe & boring route with Windows is not only not as exciting as it could be, but it might end up hurting them. They're going to have to work hard to distinguish themselves from the litary of low-end models. The fact that this booklet (I'm totally shocked, btw, no one else used that) seems to be of nicer build quality will help, but we'll see.

A touchscreen laptop running Maemo (natively, with custom firmware) would fulfil the dream of a number of folks.
