They promised a unique phone. (check)

They promised a superior user interface. (check)

They promised a really nice iPod.(check)

They promised a great phone to use the internet on. (check)

They promised a lot of great apps to help you get more out of your phone. (check)

Look, Apple promised a lot of things with thier phone. They delivered on every single one of them.

Whats with the entitled attitude?

ALMOST ALL OF YOU COMPLAINING ABOUT THE IPHONE DON'T EVEN OWN ONE!!!

Those of us who own it love it.

There is a reason for that. And it's not the hype. It's the phone. Take a look at the hype the storm got, customers hate it. The instinct, the pre, the wing, the list goes on. Phones that were hyped up to the point o...

You obviously don't read up about what people think of the iphone.

So you like the phone, great. But there are quite a few who don't. (some going so far as to setting up a second line for voice, or getting a mifi so they can actually have data)

the iphone was the new toy that everyone wanted. Apple made the mistake of resting on their laurels instead of continuing to be innovative and pushing the envelope, and now they are catching heat for it.

Dude, the iPhone has been out for three years now. It's no longer the new toy and it is still the top selling smart phone on the market.

It's still a toy for most people. And Apple is doing little to push to continue to be innovative.

Copy/paste

voice commands?

MMS?

These are all features that other smartphones have had for years, but they are spending millions trying to make them out to be new features.

The first iphone was revolutionary, the rest were pushed out by a company enjoying popularity instead of continuing to develop new ideas.

I like Apple, I'm just disappointed in the iphone.

Heck, APPS have been around since dot-matrix screens made their way onto cell phones. From the snake game to calculators and calendars to stuff you could download later, there's nothing new about what the iPhone can do. Just...

iPhone>Blackberry.
how would apple put on a keyboard on the iPhone? is it going to slide out? because then you can bitch about the slide out keyboard is wearing out and apple continues to disappoint you. the on-screen keyboard responds very well.

😳 Yeah but Apple has the most sought after app that is very useful in mainstream use of texting and emailing. I can't remember the last time I didn't use the farting application in response to a client.

There is a lot to say about Hype. It can create an illusion of something great that actually causes a frenzy of poularity only to dwindle by the fundamentals of reality. Pet Rocks, Dogless Leashes, 8 balls, Hula Hoops, Motorola Razors and so forth. all created by hype and that everyone wanted in on it.

This is what makes the iphone's weakness within reach. As you stated, Apple can do what they want.
Wrong!
While they instrumented a path for everyone to follow, they just stopped there. No new advances. They just start slapping together a new device after new device with features already implemented on other manufacture devices. Now they are riding the coat tails of thier app store to signify advancements? They are using their current sp...

Slammer,
Thanks for having educated responses to things!
But to discredit the iPhone's success as an end result of hype I think is a little misguided.
"They just start slapping together a new device after new device with features already implemented on other manufacture devices."
Certainly, the features they are adding to it are already around on other devices and have been for years, but these aren't the big differences in models that they release.
To look at the improvements from the iPhone 2G to the 3G to the 3GS, technologically, they are much more than simply adding silly features. For example, if you've browsed the web on the 2G then used the 3G or tried to open Google Earth side-by-side on a 3G and 3GS, you could see and app...

To be honeest with you Jeffro, I don't think anyone can discredit the success of the iphone. The proof in the sales. However, as I stated in my other post, Beanie Babies, Tickle Me Elmos Etc were all huge success stories by Hype and trend. These items were nothing new to the stuffed toy world yet the cute factor won the hearts of the world. Frenzies of crowds getting trampled at store openings to get the next greatest thing. Insane! Now comes the iphone under the same principle. Something new in looks and touch control, but feature wise it lacked. You brought up 2G and the variants of the 3Gs. This is the perfect example of my point. 3G was around long before the iphone. The iphone touted the browser as an ultimate experience yet they left o...

Sooner or later tho people are gonna get tired of it and not care about the iphone anymore. Look at Motorola who rode that Razr horse to the ground gave it some cpr and rode it to the ground 10 feet later. Look at motorolla now? They are in some trouble. And Motorolla tried to keep the razr phone line update with current features. The v3xx had a better camera the mp3 player/mem card slot and 3g, the v9/v9x added a better camera and gps and that was when those features were emerging not standard on every other phone. Right now apple is a one-trick pony with the iphone they need to come out with something else innovative or they'll be in moto's boat in a year or 2.

People bought the iPhone - yes based on a lot of hype - but also on the credits of the phone. Is releasing annual versions with no groundbreaking advancements working for Apple though? Hell yes it is.
Apple is not stupid. You know they're working on other projects (i.e. iPhone Nano?) to drop when the time is right. Right now they are going to gradually build this product up until the time is ripe, and they've squeezed every dime they can out of this phone.
As far as the RAZR goes, lesson well learned - it came out in 2005, they didn't change enough to keep up, and its done for. Funny though that 4 years later people still use it as the benchmark of a "cool" phone. 'tards.

The argument that apple provides a superior product and can therfore "do what it wants" is fallacious and silly.

"Yes but we make a great phone" is not a legal defence.

Apple also promised to abide by all laws regarding fair business practices when they decided to sell phones in the United States. Right now the fcc is not so sure they have met that obligation.

Whether or not the Iphone is "the new standard" is as irrelevant as whethor or not you or I or anyone else likes the phone.
