Big red:

Get the envtouch, You can pull up work and excel (and PDF, Powerpoint, etc) , it allows calander sync and it DOES NOT require a data plan. Heck, you can even sync it to Microsoft exchange servers for 5 a month (plus the data you incur without a data plan) if you want to.

On top of that it has a great camera, and it's a full touch screen. There is no reason someone "needs" a smartphone but "doesn't need the features." It's want, pure and simple.

Sorry, but smartphone features without a data plan is a PDA, which still exist (and are pretty cheap all things considered). most even include wifi, so people can wirelessly sync their contacts, pull up whatever they want, and not have to worry about data.

And companies will continue offering a service/option as long as it is profitable. Offering smartphones without the service is no longer profitable (them selling $600+ phones for 199, the profit for voice data falling drastically, etc).

There are at least a handful of basic phones on every carrier that will do most of what people who traditionally "needed" a smartphone to do without requiring a data plan. Customers can choose one of them. Wanting a phone for a status symbol is never a justifiable reason for a carrier to take a loss to retain an unprofitable customer.
