the fact that now the wireless companies, namely big companies like at&t and tmobile are forcing people to get a data plan even if the customer does not need one can't afford one just because they want a smart phone.

That is the dumbest thing I've ever read on Phonescoop.

You don't get free cable just because you bought the "box"

You don't get HD cable just for subscribing to the "basic" package.

The examples go on and on and on. If you don't wanna pay the data, THEN DON'T GET A SMARTPHONE.

Thoughts and Ideas such as yours are the reason the wireless industry is the way it is today, full of entitlement and egotistics. Wake up

Well yeah, But cable and satellite companies offer price tiers. I believe in having a data package on smartphones but there should be a tier. I have GPS in my vehicle so I don't need it on my phone. I very rarely use the TV. So put me in a lower tier. This is another attempt at squeezing more $$ out of subscribers. I really get tired of associates taken the sides of their respective carriers. It makes for poor customer interest and why the industry is; as you say the way it is. Subscribers can't and will not absorb anymore of what these carriers try to get away with.

Ok first of all if you want a smart phone there is a good chance you will axedently use the Internet these phones are meant for you to use the Internet with them, i hate it when the customer who get around the not having the Internet plans then call in and say that didn't use it solves alot of problems with the ways things have been going for the wireless industry lately, if you don't want a phone that requires data don't complain that you cant get a blackberry if you can afford the phone you can afford to have to get the data plan end of story!!!!!

What about when you buy a big TV over 50 inches and you know that TV is HD but you don't care about HD you just want it because it's a big ass TV. With the above posts logic I would be required to pay for HD just because my TV is capable of receiving the signal. What next, because I have a TV I am required to get cable? You wake up these company's should be putting the customer first and tailor to the needs of the individual, have you ever thought that maybe I wanted a smartphone for texting and to sync my phone with Outlook for contacts and calender. Please go out into the retail field and tell a customer that even though they want the product that you will not sell it to them because it isn't right for them or better yet tell me I can't ha...

Way to twist words. If you want to buy a big frickin t.v. and have normal t.v. you can, but the whole jist of this thread is that you want a phone but to back out a requirment.
If its a requirment to have a data plan on the smartphone then don't complain, its the way it is. Lots of dumbphones are beginning to have the capability to sync with your precious outlook for calender and contacts (this is the most b.s. excuse for not wanting data, your calender isn't that important).

Its ridicuolus to pay the money you pay for smartphones and not want the data. Someone mentioned tiers. There are tiers on most carriers but don't say "there should be tiers" and really mean "why can't i get this free, i pay every month"

Buy a phone that fit...

I get my phone service for free from the two big carriers (Big Red and Big Blue) so this discussion is based on the conversations I have with the 2000 people that walk thru our doors everyday, most of them that want the smartphones are because of there ego yes but some of them would love a phone where they could do calender and contacts as well as pull up a excel and Word document for reference to certain calls they receive everyday. Just because you need these features in a phone doesn't mean you want to send them VIA e-mail, tiers would be good but that goes back to why not just offer pay per use and the people that say they don't want data why not just block it from the account so they can't get charges for "accidentally accessing data" A...

Big red:

Get the envtouch, You can pull up work and excel (and PDF, Powerpoint, etc) , it allows calander sync and it DOES NOT require a data plan. Heck, you can even sync it to Microsoft exchange servers for 5 a month (plus the data you incur without a data plan) if you want to.

On top of that it has a great camera, and it's a full touch screen. There is no reason someone "needs" a smartphone but "doesn't need the features." It's want, pure and simple.

Sorry, but smartphone features without a data plan is a PDA, which still exist (and are pretty cheap all things considered). most even include wifi, so people can wirelessly sync their contacts, pull up whatever they want, and not have to worry about data.

And companies will ...

The difference is is that the type of TV you hook up to your cable network does not affect the network.

The type of phone you hook up DOES.

As I've said before, if customers bought smartphones at retail (or at least a higher price) and agreed to pay and and all PPU internet they used, cellphone companies would more than likely give them that option. The problem is is that customers don't, and so it's not profitable for cellphone companies to offer the feature anymore.

29.99 for email and web
44.99 for access for Business Enterprise servers.

GPS isn't included with most data packages.

I get tired of customers assuming that just because they want something they deserve getting it.

If a customer does not want to pay the fees, they can get another phone. Choices have costs.

Personally, I would be fine if customers who buy smartphones at retail (or provide their own equipment) are able to activate the phone without a data service providing they also sign a waiver that is legally binding that they will pay any and all charges incurred from using the device.

But as carriers cannot require a said waiver (and they have no way or recouping losses), you won't see this.

-If you want a gas guzzler you have to pay a gas guzzler tax (even if you NEVER DRIVE THE CAR)

-If you buy 20 acres you have to pay the increased tax on it, even if you only use the 2 your house and yard sit on

If you "want" something, you are expected to pay for it. If you don't want to pay the cost, then you don't purchase the product. It's really not that hard of a concept.

1. Buy a standalone PDA. They're pretty cheap and still available (I have some colleagues who work in prisons and can't have phones or cameras, so they use separate PDAs).

2. Buy an iPod touch. Almost the same features as the iPhone, but no phone.

3. Snag a PDA phone off of ebay and don't activate the phone. Just use the wifi.

It kind of stinks to not be able to consolidate your devices into one, but if you want a PDA and no data package, you have options.
