AT&T Wireless Defrauding Consumers

In the Austin, TX area customers have been hard hit with lack of bandwidth by AT&T. iPhones, Blackberry's etc constantly are losing calls, having call failures, sending calls straight to voice mail, not to mention unable to download or stream video from their phones thanks to AT&T's lapse in providing dependable and adequate service. AT&T rep's are telling iPhone and Blackberry users to modify their phone settings from 3G to Edge in order to reduce their phone issues, when AT&T is charging customers for 3G services (not Edge). Why are consumers like grazing cattle and not complaining to the FCC about AT&T charging for services they're not rendering? Answer: Because most American consumers aren't smart enough or give a darn. Now I'm hea...

Now I am feeling pretty good about having Verizon as my cell phone provider. Common knowledge amoung people in the cell phone industry and sophistocated consumers know that Verizon and Sprint use CDMA/EVDO for their service - CDMA only carries voice calls and EVDO only carries data 'calls'. They use different areas of spectrum owned by the cell phone provider and thus one can not crowd out the other (voice calls vs. data 'calls'). It may be possible for the CDMA voice bandwidth to be overwhelmed on a rare occasion; i.e. occ drop a call, or the EVDO to operate slower during peak times, but each technology will not interfer with the other.

Where are those AT&T fanboys who were proud of the fact that GSM uses the same bandwidths for both ...

If CDMA is so great why is verizon spending billions to switch to gsm? LTE is a gsm technology. The real problem is how successfull the iPhone has been and overwhelmed the network in places like Austin.

I have a question about the Iphone overwhelming the network, I think I heard there are 15m Iphone users in the U.S. so for example, what is the difference between there being say 15m Iphone users, and 15m Blackberry users. Pretty much what I'm saying is a 3G phone is a 3G phone, don't they all effect the network the same way.

I use a Nokia N95, how does the Iphone overwhelm ATT's network more than my Nokia N95 BOTH of which are 3G handsets???

And by the way, just because I don't own an Iphone doesn't mean I don't brownse the web a lot on my phone, so let's not be assuming that Iphone users brownse the web more than everyone else does. This most recent billing cycle, I used just under 3gigs of data on my N95. Peoplese habits vary, it's ...

I believe BB's route webpages through a proxy server, taking some of the strain off of the back-end of the network.

Here in the Chicagoland area, I have definitely noticed an improvement in coverage and consistency in ATT's 3G network over the past year. I know they have both 1900MHz and 850MHz spectrum here, but I don't know if they're switching to 850 or just lighting up more 3G cell sites (probably a bit of both).

Ok, I get what your saying about BB's being routed through some proxy server, but wouldn't the same apply to me, for example I have Opera Mini loaded on my Nokia N95, when I'm browsing the web on my phone, don't webpages get routed through Opera's servers?

So then how are webpages routed using Iphones? On the Safari browser. Directly through ATT's network? Or does Apple have some servers?

This issue is cell site capacity. Even though you are using a BB which proxies through to RIM, or Opera, or whatever, that data is still being piped through the sites. Lots of people using data on one site will gobble up the bandwidth and cause problems regardless of what device or browser they're using.
The topic of pointing out the iPhone is valid. TONS of people who never used their phones for data EVER have switched over to the iPhone, and are using a lot of data now. It's a valid point, not to discredit our Nokia friend there.
Also to the point of the post about AT&T charging for 3G service but recommending EDGE, thus defrauding customers - that's just plain retarded. 🙄 If you are say, in rural New York where there is only EDGE...

Well you certainly do a good job of sounding like you work for ATT. I still think data usage depends on the user not the device. I can have a Motorola Razr using Opera and use more data than someone using a WinMo smartphone. I do browse quite a bit on my beloved Nokia N95.

The thing is there are a lot of people who bought iPhones who probably wouldn't have gotten a smartphone otherwise. Many bought it to have the cool phone. Others wanted to combine their iPod and mobile phone into a single device.

These are people who wouldn't be using the bandwidth at all, if there'd been no iPhone.

Well guess what I can combine the functions of a phone & Ipod w/o having an Iphone. It's called just about EVERY phone out there now a days (including 6/30/07 when the Iphone was launched) can do mp3 & phone functionality.

Personally my method of combining an Ipod & phone is the Nokia N95.

Asserting that VZW is switching to GSM is akin to saying the Green family is switching from coffee to tea, and Vince is switching from juice to tea. Thus, Vince is becoming a member of the Green family. Do you see the fallacy?

VZW is not switching to GSM. LTE is not GSM, nor an exclusively GSM technology. Rather, it is an all IP, OFDMA based 4G technology that some GSM carriers and some CDMA carriers have selected for the next phases in the evolution of their networks.
