Again...stop playing catch up

JeffdaBeat

These companies need to stop playing catch up to the iPhone and make a name for themselves. As long as these phones and software continue to try to be "like" the iPhone, people are going to skip the imitation and go for the real thing. I understand some folks have to have Windows Mobile, but it is mostly consumers who are getting these phones. Stop trying to be an iPhone killer or a iPhone copy cat and make your product stand out away from Apple...

So the implication here would be that no other manufacturer or software provider should offer Applications?

It's common sense, everyone wants a piece of the Apple pie (haha... Apple Pie). The whole I-Phone killer idea is long gone by most, except over zealous Apple fans who want to continue to tout their precious Iphone as the best product in the world.

The Iphone is fantastic, has some awesome features, and was marketed and distributed as close to flawless as you can get for the most part. That being said I wouldn't trade my Blackberry for an Iphone (and I am a Mac user) simply because some of the functionality on my Blackberry works better for ME. It's a novel idea I know, but in my particular situation the Blackberry is a better to...

Yeah i dont think that 1st guy didnt know what he was talking about. wm has thousands of apps. and actually does a whole lot more than the iphone does. you can multi task..most apps are free. its fully customiseable. skyfire full web browser with flash enabled. word, excel, outlook email. ect. why not make it easy for a developer to make an app for your device. Most developers of apps have their apps on different platforms. which goes to say, just because ea makes madden for playstation they shouldnt for xbox? nonsense. I think its a good idea for the developer to have their app on more than one device, microsoft making it easier for them and therefore get more money when a person is buying their app from multiple platforms instead of just o...

No, I think you misunderstand me. I am not saying that the Apple iPhone invented app(lication)s at all. They have been around for years. I am not saying that the iPhone is the end-all-be-all of PDA's. What I am saying is Microsoft, Google, RIM, HTC, Palm...all these companies, in their own ways, are setting themselves and their products to compete with the iPhone. Not by making independent movies forward with what they are good at or even coming out with something new. Instead, they are taking aspects of the iPhone that make consumers say, "Oh, is this your version of the iPhone." I said this about Palm syncing with iTunes instead of making it's own program. Now it is playing catch up with Apple because they are releasing updates that make t...

If Plam had their own music store, you'd simply state that they are copying Apple anyway. Why not just eliminate the middle man, and sync with iTunes? It's easier and cheaper.

Also, there have already been iPhone killers. The Touch Pro and Diamond, just for a quick example, and soon the Touch Pro 2 and Diamond 2 will destroy it.

Hell, it's not hard to kill the iPhone. No MMS, no tethering, limited 3g support, etc. I've got a Casio Boulder that I sell that does all of that and just about every thing else the iPhone does, that I can think of anyway.

To manage music? Even Blackberry has it's own program to do that. Why leach off of a host that doesn't want you there. One minute, your customers can sync with iTunes, the next minute they can't...

And if you think a Window's Mobile Device is going to destroy the iPhone...good luck with that. Hasn't done it yet with any iteration of a Windows Mobile Device.

Lastly, you are write in all cases. But somehow, in the month of June alone, the iPhone 3GS was the second most sold PDA in the US even though it is only offered by one carrier...yeah, it's totally going to die soon.

I never said the iPhone was going to die. I only said that there are better phones out there. My Touch Pro could run circles around the iPhone, and did, everytime I compared it side by side.

There wasn't one thing the iPhone could do, that I couldn't do with my TP, but there were a lot of things my TP can do, that the iPhone can't.

The Touch is more of a work devise and the iphone an entertainment device or toy. Try getting att to replace an iphone YOU broke, they won't even sell insurance on it it is so fragile. Want to print your photos at the store, sorry, iphone has no memory card. Battery run down, can't replace it with a larger capacity one or carry a spare. Want to send pictures and an excel document to someone in an email attachment, sorry, can't on the iphone. Want to download silly apps with fart noises, that the iphone can do.

...If YOU purposely break your device why should the carrier (at&t or whoever) be responsible to give you a new device?

Walgreens/CVS lets you email them photos to have printed AND if you use your phone for pictures you most likely have a MicroSD card and we all know those readers DO NOT take MicroSD so your argument is arbitrary anyways.

If you are concerned about Battery life do not fret, the iPhone has one of the largest batteries on the market. If you are used to carrying around 2 batteries (99% of people don't) you can purchase a battery extender for even cheaper than most PDA's second batteries. Its roughly the same weight as a mobile devices battery.

The iPhone has 32 different apps that concern Microsoft Office most of w...

I didn't say purposely break the phone, I said if you break it, however it happens. The number one reason customers bring in phones for repair is water damage and dropping. The iphone, whether you like it or not IS a fragile phone. I like the fact that att doesn't cover the iphone. My shop has to date fixed 625 of them giving me an overall profit of about $30K just on that one brand of phone, and I repair all brands. That is the most money I have made on one phone model in the 25 years I have owned my wireless business. True, I don't like Apple at all and I will never purchase anything from them because i don't like their proprietary business practices.I tell everyone about the lack of insurance to protect them.Only Best Buy sells a warranty pl...

You're right. I realize that the iPhone is overhyped, and delivers less functiion than my Touch Pro, and my BlackBerry. I guess that makes me "ignorant". Laughing

BTW, you obviously missed the joke, which was aimed at people like you. Wink

There is one thing that made me choose Windows Mobile over Blackberry and iPhone...

You have completely missed the subject of the article. This has nothing to do with the consumer porting over apps or anything like that. What this is talking about is a method that Microsoft has made available so the developer (programmer) of the app can easily transition the app to work on WinMo.

This has nothing to do with trying to kill the iphone. You seem to forget that Microsoft, unlike Apple, is not a hardware developer. They have absolutely nothing to do with making a iphone killer. They simply provide an OS to phone manufacturers and have now made it easy for programmers to modify their previously written applications so that they are compatible with the WinMo OS.

No one is concerned about killing the iphone anymore to be ho...

I get what you are saying but their is also the other side of the story. What you are saying is like Ford started the windshield wipers so no other companies should copy the design, they should do something different. That's a silly concept when the whole goal of a company is to make money. As far as gaining their own developers from the ground up that takes lots money and more importantly time. Iphones APP store made it a great phone. Take that away and most people wouldnt bother with the Iphone same with the Android phones. People have always designed apps for winmo phones but they've been spread out everywhere. The only thing WinMo really is doing is bringing all the apps together in one place. The Wii does have many of the Xbox/PS...

That it shouldn't be easy for a programmer to import their products to another platform? Is that the real complaint?

THAT is innovative in of itself. Microsoft wants people to not be afraid to devlop applications for both platforms, and wants it to be easy, not to be "me too" in the crowd, but to give one more avenue for end users to get more application acces, broaden it's appeal even further.

If you ask me, it's not that they're trying to pull business from Apple, but from RIM.

So by the initial logic do you also believe that Xbox is trying to "play catch up" by offering the same games that are available on PS3? The point is not to copy what the iphone can do, it is to make it easier for developers, many of whom are going to want their applications available on as many platforms as possible.

How is this any form of emulation? The applications were merely coded in a fashion that would run on the iPhone. Code is easy to alter to support other operating systems. These applications are there own entity. They people who own an iPhone and think it gives them some proprietary "status" over everyone else need to get real...
