I think it was one of many factors leading to this influenced decision. I bet the board members at google were telling him he must resign. Just my guess.

I think that was the tipping point for him but from what I read its because Google is now in direct competition with apple. They have Android competing with the iphone and their Chrome OS going to compete with OSX.
