You ask me to read my history? Well unfortunately maybe you should read yours. The high points of unions you speak of only applies to unskilled factory workers. Historically those dime a dozen unskilled workers were mistreated by there employers because if they complained all the employer had to do was go out to the street corner and pick up any one to fill that persons spot. So yes you are correct in your accretion that union workers greatly helped to increase the work environment for unskilled workers such as those in the textile factories of England at the start of the industrial revolution.

Skilled labor on the other hand is a completely different story. Though out history skilled laborers have been in high demand due to the nature of there trait. As a result employers have wowed them with cushier job settings.

Now lets talk about current job settings, as far as I know the telecommunications company I work for is the only nonunionized telco in the US. I know for a fact I make at least twice what a Verizon or ATT worker makes for the exact same job. In addition I get 6 weeks of paid vacation every year. To top it off I am a top performer so I get one of the largest raises in my department year after year.

But alas, you are correct if you are an under performing unskilled individual then yes you do need a union.
