Dam why not Phoenix; coverage out here SUCKS beyond all....I get my text messages a day late and half the time I get weak signals around the valley, and I have an iPhone... 👿
They also need to turn on that dam picture messaging and tethering for the iPhone now and stop screwing around. Cant believe there this far behind and yet they expect us to pay our bill on time. B.S. 😈

AT&T does not have any Cellular 850 MHz spectrum in Phoenix, only PCS 1900 MHz. There will be no W-CDMA 850 in Phoenix.

Well, if I'm comprehending this article correctly, AT&T will be adding 3G sites on 850MHz band where it's needed.

You can't deploy anything on 850 MHz if you don't have the license for the area. I think a lot of people are being misled by this. If AT&T only has PCS spectrum for an area, that's all they can use. In any given area, there can only be two cellular (850) carriers. Say for instance that Verizon and Alltel are the two 850 MHz license holders, how can AT&T deploy 850 MHz 3G?

Verizon was allowed to keep both cellular licenses for Phoenix. So far, Verizon isn't doing any swapping of existing spectrum with AT&T in most markets. So you're right. They can't launch 3G in 850 if Verizon isn't giving up one of the 2 850 licenses.

Not in Phoenix. VZW (nee ALLTEL) is the Cellular A-side 850 MHz licensee. And VZW is the Cellular B-side 850 MHz licensee. That is it. There are typically only two Cellular 850 MHz licensees per market.

So, in Phoenix, AT&T will remain W-CDMA 1900.

Right, so Verizon will actually own both cellular licenses there.

There is no "typical" in the two-cellular license per market. There is always only two carriers unless a certain carrier is allowed to own both. But there is never more than two.

i'm sure in that case they will be divesting of one group of licenses.

No, the Phoenix CMA is not one of the markets in which the FCC required VZW-ALLTEL to divest one of its two Cellular 850 MHz licenses. VZW will retain both Cellular A-side & B-side licenses in Phoenix.

No, that is not quite correct.

Cellular 850 MHz markets are defined as Cellular Market Areas (CMAs). Most CMAs have just two licensees: one Cellular A-side licensee & one Cellular B-side licensee. But some markets have three or more Cellular 850 MHz licensees, as one or both of the Cellular licenses in those markets have been geographically partitioned into multiple licenses.

For a perfectly apropos example, look at the Phoenix CMA. It has three Cellular 850 MHz licensees: VZW (nee ALLTEL) Cellular ...

Tucson Sucks Too. I guess Phoenix and Tucson are not considered big enough cities in AT&T's view.

Again, like Phoenix; Verizon got to keep both cellular licenses in Tucson. So no 3G in the 850 band there either.

Not just Phoenix but AT&T 3G coverage sucks in the whole state of Arizona and the entire Southwest US.
