I need clarification.

Rich, if you read this, could I get some clarification on this. By reading this article it seems like AT&T will add new 3G 850MHz cell sites. I thought AT&T was going to allocate 3G to the 850MHz band, meaning just moving it from the 1900MHz to the 850MHz.

They will be doing both. In areas where AT&T holds a cellular license, they will transition their PCS 3G network over to cellular. Also, in areas that really have poor service, they will be adding brand new towers. I believe these towers will be a combination of cellular and PCS as well as 3G and EDGE.

It's probably a combination of both. Planning a network with good coverage is quite complex.

Because the 850 and 1900 MHz radio bands have different natural properties, you need more towers to cover the same area with 1900 than you do with the 850 band.

When you run a network in both bands, (as AT&T already does in most places, between 2G and 3G,) it's more efficient to locate some 850 and 1900 equipment together at the same site wherever you can, even though the networks for each band have to be designed separately.

In urban areas, it's even more complex, since networks must be designed with higher density to match the denser population. Higher density is achieved with intentionally smaller (lower-power) cells, allowing the towers ...

wow, I knew it was complex, but not THIS complex. 🤣
