Why are You Paying for this

For some reason I just don't understand why an AT&T customer would pay more money for an iphone when the biggest difference is all software.

The 1st generation iphone was upgraded to the iphone 3G the only difference was software. and not the difference between the iphone 3G and the iphone 3Gs is software and a better camera. Come On, are you serious! Why don't you just stay with the phone you have right now and just update the software for free. And save $200-300. In this economy, i don't see myself spending that much money for something I can get for free.

Actually, there were hardware differences. 1st generation didn't have 3g capabilities. 3g doesn't have vid, and each generation has a double size difference. It's not just software. Not saying I'd buy it if I had either, but, there are hardware differences. Significant ones for some. Bigger harddrive means more games...

I know about the inner workings of apple and I can tell you yes there may be some different hardware but it is not as cracked up as they might leave you to think. For a company as Apple that always does this first-class. Why would they begin with a phone with no 3G when that the biggest thing in the wireless industry at the time the iphone came out??

It is because Apple has a brilliant marketing director and he knows that the best way to sell something is to give it to them one bit at a time because it leaves the customers wanting more.

1st gen has no 3G, people want 3g, so apple gives them 3g but makes them pay for it.

3g doesn't have vid, people want vid, so apple gives them vid but makes them pay for it.

you could say the sam...

Amen!!!!

I have been saying that all along. Hence the term sheep. I cant stand to see a company purposely take advantage of customers. One day I may have an Iphone, but will be years down the road when they run out of old stuff to add and begin adding innovative things again (like the web browser adn multitouch screen -thats innovation). I think they are running out of ideas which is why they sent a stripped down version and slowly adding them year by year. My prediction is that the new Iphone next year will multi task with a task manager and everything. I mean up until now, the phone didnt even have stereo bluetooth.

but if people will buy it they will continue to do this.

Whats the sheep favorite fruit? APPLE!

Actually with the new iPhone 3Gs here is the upgrades:

3.2 mp camera with auto focus/macro
Video camera with 30 fps
Photo and Video editing software
600 mhz cpu (up from the iPhone 3G, 433 mhz)
256 mb of ram (up from 128 mb)
New graphics chipset (capable of high res textures and shadowing)
16 gb and 32 gb of memory (up from 8 and 16)

So to say the new iPhone 3Gs isn't worth the upgrade is only said by those who can't afford it.

Do you think most of this stuff could have been included in the original Iphone?

No, two years ago a 600 mhz cpu for a cellphone was almost sci-fi. As far as video capture is concerned sure, but I doubt it would have been 30 fps VGA because that would be taxing on 128 mb of ram.

Look, I'm not saying that there are not some differences in the hardware. I mean come on, if you are going to charge for a new phone, shouldn't it be a completly new phone. Shouldn't it be able to do something that the previous ones could not do and won't be able to do with a software. Video capture at 30 fps does sound good but like I said before I love apple, i use a mac book. i believe that apple does everything first class, but at the same time they let me down as a customer because they keep changing their product every 11-12 months and expect me to pay the original price.

Oh and I make over $100,000 in the cellular industry so I can definetly afford an iphone. I won't hold that against you since you didn't know that about me.

I am glad for your financial success, but Apple is not forcing your into a 3Gs, they did offer most of the new changes through a software update to the old iPhones. Tell me another phone on the market that does that?

That is true however the G1 is a sim card phone which could theoretically be used on AT&T service this question was more guided towards Verizon users.
