As a consumer, I feel this will force carriers to step to the plate and push harder to keep their subscribers. I would welcome more carriers to do this.

They're just giving away the farm because they know they won't be around next year.

and to make it easier for whoever purchases those markets to not be locked into customers with 2 year contracts expecially if it's ATT who will want to shut down those cdma customers.

True. However, Carriers offer 30 day trials. The most common problem is billing and customer service. Usually by the time these two things are utilized or experienced, the 30 days has expired and the customer is pretty much locked in for two years with an assault of inconsistant billing practices or less than stellar CS. One year at least gives the customer an upper hand to leave sooner.

kinda funny... People thought the same thing a couple years ago when My Circle first came out. I think with the rate of data additions on lines, the low churn rate, etc. There should be plenty to allow this.

A majority of those markets have already been auctioned off. AT&T is buying 79 of those markets for $2.35 billion.

- Most companies already offer one year contracts. You just pay a bit more for the phone. For our phones (Verizon) it is $40 more for everything but blackberries. Yes, alltel is giving the bigger discount on one year contracts.. this just means they are eating that additional cost, and would not be sustainable if they were not planning to go out of business soon.
-The sale reps or the corp is taking the hit for this. One year contracts are not nearly as profitable as two year ones. Since we all know how businesses work, we know that its the reps who will end up making up for the profits lost in the long run.
-The divested markets will be bought up soon, meaning that the likelihood of a major carrier feeling "competition" from their i...

Or if you are really concerened buy a used phone on ebay and verizon will allow you to sign up on published rate plan with no contract.

People always complain about contracts but I never understood. You sign a 2 yr, get 150 to 250 off(some PDA's+ BB)... You cancel they want their money back. Verizon just released no contract plans and I would venture to guess hardly anyone gets them unless they already own a phone they want activated.

Take the Money off upfront, if service doesn't work out...give it back, always seemed fair to me. Or pay $100's more just so your not in contract

I mixed on that, I think the contracts are either too long are the etf fee's are too high.

I do agree buy it outright, works better for gsm carriers, simple unlock and you can use the phone on either AT&T or TMO, or just get an unlocked phone. The major CDMA carriers are just too anal about activating each others phones. Depends on which way the wind is blowing and if they feel like doing it.
