The bottom line: AT&T told Rim what they wanted on the cell phone. So, it's not Rim fault. It's AT&T.

Jay, you should know better than most that a cheap PDA-style device is exactly what consumers want. And that's what AT&T is delivering.

I don't understand why people come onto these forums to complain about a particular model's "shortcomings" when there are obvious alternatives offered by the same carrier. If you need 3G in a device, then don't consider a non-3G handset...no complaints necessary.

I agree totally. I am one of those people who do not need 3G and am looking forward to the 8900. I assume that eventually the ATT network will be all 3G (4G or whatever) but until then I can get a great Blackberry at a good price that does everything I need it to do and it has wi-fi - I have my own wi-fi network at home so I assume I can use it to make calls without using up my minutes? That is something I can use more then 3G.

This always makes me laugh too. No wifi? no 3G? Doesn't make coffee?

Well written response

AT&T already has a blackbery with 3G its called the BOLD. This would be my guess on why they decided to not have 3G on this one. Plus if they added 3G to the curve it would drive the price up on the handset

Sure some of us love the super fast net, but crap batterie comes along with it. i couldnt tell you how many people i have seen switch from the bold to 8900. people want the beast processor.

You guys have to remember that 3G is used for other things besides faster web access, maybe not here in the U.S. with AT&T but certainly in foreign countries. For example, 3G (WCDMA 2100, to be precise) is by far the most widely implemented network in Japan for carrying ordinary voice calls. Most if not all of AT&T's 3G phones include WCDMA 2100 in addition to their own domestic 3G bands (WCDMA 850 and 1900), so those phones would work in Japan, but their non-3G phones wouldn't.

Personally, I really like the BB 8900 - it's been out on T-Mobile for quite some time now - and it'll definitely meet the needs of most average users, but at the same time, it is slightly strange for AT&T to be adopting it when most of their advertising rev...

Actually, AT&T does use 3G in the U.S. for voice traffic as well, now that I think it through again.
