It's quite strange that VZW has chosen to roll this out on the single BlackBerry in their lineup with a truly unlocked internal GPS, yet they're still (for the time being) leaving those of us with any other VZW handset in the dark as far as Canadian navigation is concerned. Plus $20/month is quite steep. Garmin Mobile for BlackBerry works with the Storm's internal GPS and costs only $80 for the lifetime of the device!

Umm… It is only released on the 9530 as it is the newest global phone in the Blackberry lineup. I have a feeling that the 8830 will not be around much longer as it is almost 3 years old… Also, if you read the posting, you may have noticed that it states it will be rolled out on other handsets and for other countries..

As far as your pricing info goes, You can head over to Garmin.com and you will see that Garmin mobile has 2 price points, 1) $99.99 for North America and 2) $122.00 for Europe. This is if you do not need the “puck” . You can only have 1 installed on the Blackberry at a time so if you buy the N. America version and decide to travel to Europe You MUST uninstall and purchase the other…

The price points you mentioned are full retail, not the Garmin BlackBerry Lounge discounted prices, and a global phone is not needed for North American roaming (Canada and Mexico), but aside from that, what I'm trying to say is that Storm owners have always had alternate options for GPS navigation outside of the U.S. since Verizon didn't cripple the GPS on that phone, yet for some reason this is the first device that they're rolling out global VZ Navigator on. Meanwhile, those of us with any other handset have had no GPS navigation options for use outside the country (that is, without a smartphone and an external GPS puck), even those of us who pay dearly for Nationwide Plus Canada plans, simply because VZW chose not to ...

Why is GPS such a big deal? Especially global?
You will fly there and either rent a car in that case for 10 bucks more you get the car with GPS or if you are not renting a car you will be using a taxi in which case who cares about GPS that is what the cab driver is for! 😳 But thats my two cents!

I forgot that GPS only has a single application - occasional guided travel. 🙄

For 90% of the people that use GPS thats all they use it for. So again why do people make such a big deal about this!?

You just contradicted yourself in two sentences: Based on your extensive research, apparently only 10% of people really have a need for their own GPS, yet at the same time, an indeterminate amount of people are making such a big deal out of having GPS functionality that you're irked by it.

I'm not going to continue this thread and get into a huge discussion of why I need or should have access to my own GPS, but just the very fact that "people make such a big deal about this" should indicate the demand for the technology. Anyone who actually travels regularly knows its value.
