Why do you think they want to extend their exclusivity agreement for at least another year...

I seriously doubt Apple would develop a CDMA version, especially when Verizon said they are moving to LTE.

If anything, Apple might be a launch device for the LTE launch. I can see it happening especially since they were the "launch" device for the AT&T name change.

I agree, it would make much more sense to wait until LTE is launched. Apple would only need to make one phone as both VZW and att are on board to use LTE. Another problem with a cdma iphone is that, unless something changed, the battery life would be even less due to the cdma network.

Explain, then, why a CDMA/GSM phone has a lower battery life when using GSM mode vs. CDMA mode.

If anything, it would be worthwhile to make a CDMA/LTE multiband device, so it has good compatibility during the switchover. When the systems went from AMPS -> CDMA, a lot of phones were made with both before the Digital only phones. Same might be true with the LTE rollout.

I say you are correct because if the LTE is buggy which it will be more thank likely they have to be able to have a backup !! That is until it is up and running great then they can phase out cdma over time!!
