Verizon should buy Vodafone

With the United States in control of European companies, it will be a major boon to our economy. I don't like the fact that the U.K. has presence over European communications but the U.S. has very little.

I thought Vodafone was much larger than Verizon... so any buyouts would be the other direction.

Also, I don't understand why you want the US to have a presence in European communication. It makes sense for the UK, since they're part of Europe. Plus, Europe is typically ahead of us when it comes to communication technology, it would be awkward for companies that deal with completely different business practices to jump in. I'd like it the other way around... free incoming calls!

European Telcos all stink- they're all overpriced and very shady. If we expand over there ala McDonald's, it will be great for us- all of that money comes back over here.

Plus, that way, if Europe mouthes off to the USA, we can shut off their phone lines much easier.

irockash: Good points

bluecoyote: You clearly have no grasp of the differences in the American and European wireless markets... or how business works, for that matter.

Due to the increased regulatory presence of the governing bodies in European nations, communications companies have fewer choices in pricing: all incoming calls and texts must be free, all new services must meet pre-set standards, etc. Also, when you account for the fact that incoming calls/messages are not charged and tax (VAT) is included in the advertised price, the costs of wireless are pretty comparable on both sides of the Atlantic.

Secondly, just because a company that is incorporated in America has a presence in the European market does not mean that can throw...

1) European Telcos unanimously stink. That's why American Telcos would do well with our lower rate plans and our understanding of how mobile data actually works. By offering Europeans similar plans to what we have in the U.S. , gaining market share would be a cakewalk.

2) Apple and Microsoft are fined by EU nations for 'anticompetitive' practices, but EU is incapable of making a worthwhile competitor. It's not like their Linux OS is exactly going anywhere... fines in the EU is how they make their money given their inability to innovate. This is a slap-on-the-wrist fine, equivalent of paying taxes.

3) It's spelled "here." But if an American company gets a dominant foothold in Europe, they can lobby to change things to the American (corr...

Vodafone is the second largest carrier behind China Mobile (obviously). I don't think Verizon has the capital to buy that.

I don't know the market cap of Verizon Communications vs. Vodafone, not talking about VerizonWireless.

Verizon Communications - $90.11 Billion
Vodafone Group PLC - $93.13 Bil

These are the current market caps for the two companies via microsoft money, which is pretty accepted in the finance community.

This would be next to impossible, for either group to purchase the other. Remember that Voda is strictly wireless, whereas VZW is wireless/wireline.

Vodafone is working with Verizon Wireless to get LTE up, and with this lower to no roaming rates when using each others networks. Also, calling plans for each other with out long distance charges. Verizon could buy Vodafone if they like, but were talking lots of money. I would love to see the 2 networks come together. It's not impossible.

Nothing is impossible, sorry. Just the same as .999999999999999999999 isn't 1.

Anyone can buy anything. I could buy Bill Gates' house, if I wanted. ...but of course I'm talking lots of money.

If anything, Verizon will pull free from Vodafone. Their corporate execs have been talking about it for a long time.

But VZW buying its master is HIGHLY unlikely, to the point of being able to call it an impossibility.

It's not impossible. Im not saying it is going to happen, because it may not. Just like its not impossible for AT&T to put out there 3G all over the US, it could happen, but I doubt it will happen. 1) they don't have the licens to do it all over the US unlike Verizon which does except Alaska.

They can implement UMTS anywhere there is GSM. Great story though.

Things are going to get interesting in the next few years when everyone is on LTE. It could work similar (but on a much larger scale) to how AT&T launched UMTS in conjunction with Japan in Hawaii.

This would also help Verizon with its international roaming (it really needs it), but I wonder if Voda will help them on rates.

Yea, but Verizon already has very low Roaming rates for popular places in the world with there GSM phones. Discount Roaming with Vodafone.
