I have quoted you for two reasons.
1) so I can isolate the poster that I am commenting to and

I know that a Sprint bash is funny. If one were to be said, We all know it would be left on an article on something Sprint does or doesn't do. But Sprint is the first to launch a 4G network. So I am a little taken back by this comment. Where is Verizon's, ATT's or TMO's 4G? Sprint estimated an end of 2008 4G launch. It is only about 6 months late. Considering what they have been through, I personally find this very commendable.

Something that bothers me about posts like this is the fact that most people forget Sprint is not only going to be the first with 4g but they also run two completely different types of networks. Yeah Big Red bought its way to the top and AT&T lied its way there but at least Sprint thinks about consumers. The Sprint Nextel Merger wasn't to help Sprint gain customers it was because the FCC was shutting down Nextel due to Spectrum issues. Sprint decided that they would take on Nextel and make the changes needed because it was something consumers wanted. And if IDEN is so horrible why does it still have over 20,000,000 subscribers? People need to step back and look at the whole picture.

What I mean by lied their way to the top is they used what we call sheeple marketing. You say something enough times and the masses believe it. They spent billions telling everyone they were the best even before the Cingular purchase and even though reports stated otherwise.

Usually a launch of a nexgen network involves a little more than a dozen cities, -!!NOT ONE!!-.

Ok but has any other carrier launched 4G? No, so they have a head start anyway. And in Sprint's situation is it not smarter to roll out slowly and work out any final bugs and pricing? As opposed to rolling out everywhere which they could've probably done with the spectrum they own and had massive technical problems. Then you'd get everyone saying "thats what Sprint gets for trying to launch everywhere at once." No matter what Sprint haters are going to find something to complain about.

And Actually there are about 5 cities. Look up coverage for CLEAR its a product by sprint which is just a WiMax network with no celluar commitment

Stop marketing a technology that is going to bring us wireless data 3-5x faster than we are currently using? Why don't you think this should be marketed? Sprint is only doing what every other carrier is going to do in the near future.
But setting this aside, You are technically correct. 4G is the evolution path for the current 3G. WiMax can not be considered 4G because the majority of carriers have adopted LTE. This is what is considered a generation.

I normally agree with you Slammer however stating WiMax isn't 4G because other did not choose it is like saying HSPDA/EDGE is not 3G because more subscribers use EVDO. And as far as 3.5G alot of people in the cellular industry will arghue that 3.5G came out about 18 months ago when Sprint made the jump from EVDA rev.O to EVDO rev.A since the 3G jump was from 1xRTT to EVDO rev.O which is where Sprint and VZW sat for a long period of time.
So I have to disagree and state that WiMax is 4G.

4g by definition is wireless broadband not wireless Internet and WiMax is more 4g than LTE is at least at the moment since LTE doesn't really exist until they do something outside of a warehouse and out of peek environments. 4G is a wireless signal that can link your PC to your phone to your car Its one network that has the ability to transfer data across multiple mediums while remaining wireless that is what 4g is

What I'm confused about is how a measley 2-4mbps, the current real world speed for WiMax, or so that's what I hear, is considered "4G".
