This is GREAT!

Better then what we were all thinking!

Its already in more areas then Sprints WiMax if WiMax is still only in Baltimore.

There are also more phone makers supporting LTE which means a lot of phones to choose from.

This is exciting.

This is exciting. However you must remember that the cities mentioned are only in testing stages. They are not yet avaiable commercially. Sprint's WiMax has surpassed testing and is already available in Baltimore and Portland with three more cities on the way. But it is exciting!

Sprint ISN'T ambitous, 16 cities Slammer, that's how many Cingular STARTED they're 3G network with, Sprint started they're WiMax network with a measley UNAMBITOUS - 1 - city.

Where is the ambition from Sprint??? Wheres the 20-30 cities? Even Tmobile has 3G in more cities than Sprint has WiMax in!

Verizon will have there LTE in a lot more places then WiMax, one reason is because Verizon more money and the 700 area which covers the whole use except Alaska.

I'm curious what the initial real-world end-user speeds will be, I am so, so desperate for - REAL - mobile broadband, and if the speeds are at least 6 or 8mbps upon launch I'd be willing to pay, but it has to be REAL broadband!!!

I am so, so frinking sick of 400-600kbps being referred to as broadband!!!

If these companies are going to be charging a whopping $60/mo then I say give me the speeds to justify $60/mo!!!

Before DSL there was ISDN, which ran 64-128 kbps. That was broadband back then.

Mobile Broadband cards can download up to 2 Mbps on EVDO Rev. A but that depends on the signal strength. Low signal means high interference means more dropped packets means lower speed.

There are a lot of phrases that really, really frustrate me, one of them you used "up to", I also have at problem with the phrases "advertised speeds", "theoretical speeds".

That's why I go out of my way to use the words "real-world speeds", and "end-user speeds".

Because I can give a crap what the marketing of a company says, and I can give a crap about test speeds and speeds reached in a test lab.

End user & real worl .is all that matters to me.

I benchmark every braodband card before it leaves my store. I consistently get 2Mbps down and 400kbps up on the USB modems. Signal strength of EVDO is 2-3 bars.

As for consistency with speed, it does jump around a lot. It won't do constant 2Mbps, but it is the average. Signal interference, signal strength, and how many people are using 3G network right now all make a difference, as cell towers have limited bandwidth (only so many MHz frequencies to sideband before you legally and physically run out) for 3G application.

VZW started EV-DO with D.C and San Diego. Who cares how many cities they launch as long as they launch? Why is it always a p!ssing contest? The more there are the better it is for consumers.

I'm just pointing out that Sprint doesn't seem to be ambitous with WiMax.

I may be wrong but the partners listed although may be phone makers, but making 4G phones isn't what there going to do.
But rather build out everything else it takes to broadcast 4G, I.E. software, switches, etc. Possibly some 4G phones will come out to be offered in the areas VZW doesn't currently cover as mentioned. But like WiMax I think initially until phone makers get on board it will be targeted at laptops and other mobile computing devices.
