Now if only the USA can move offa 2G in the same way sooner to pave the way for OFDM-based 4G Networks

thats going to be tough probably the government will pay for it just like the DTV converter.

I think it will be a long wait. AT&T just shutdown their 1G (AMPS) network last year.

Well, AT&T did shut down their previous 2G network (TDMA/D-AMPS), however, their GSM network will remain in service well into the future.

That was because the U.S. Government mandated that any AMPS network in operation had to be maintained until 2007. You had many companies such as General Motors (OnStar) and security services lobbying to have the AMPS network sunset date extended.

Once the date had passed, I think it was February or March, I don't remember exactly, the carriers could choose to maintain their AMPS network but were not required to.

It was mandated that AMPS be maintained until February 2008, not 2007.
