Bad idea...

I don't own one of those digital converter boxes... but I imagine it works like any other set top box... if you connect by coaxial, then you will need to put the TV on channel 3 or 4 for it to work. If some TV stations are digital and some are still analog, I can easily see people getting confused as to what to do to watch different stations.

Lady to elderly mother...

"It's on channel 8."

"It's not comming on... the screen is snowy..."

"Turn on the converter box..."

"What?"

"Get the other remote and turn on the digital box."

"How do I do that?"

Etc... etc....

Actually, All channels will be viewable on the DTV Converter Box. Certain channels would not be viewable for you without the DTV Converter if they discontinue their analog transmissions.

I'm sorry, but it is not the job of the government to hold up progress because someone might get confused when trying to find their television show?! This is an absolutely ludicrous reason for trying to justify this holdup. The US is light years behind the rest of the world in this technology and this analog shutdown is the first step towards trying to catch up. In addition, the bandwidth that these television stations broadcast on has already been sold.....effective 2/17/09. Many of the purchasing companies have plans that will improve services for customers of other products, such as high speed internet and wireless phones. I cannot stress enough how these stations have been strapped and barely holding on trying to maintain 2 broadcas...
