you say credit is old and there for can not be the reason our system is breaking. you then go on to say the reason the system is breaking is because of greed. so according to your logic greed is a relatively new invention? 
I hate to break it to you greed is not new it is actually older then credit. in fact greed (wanting something you don't have) lead to credit (buying some thing you can't afford.)
The real truth though behind the current economic reality is actually natural market forces. threw out history a market colaps happens every 60 years or so. the current situation happened because commodities housing and stocks have all been rising steadily since WWII eventually all of them got so over inflated the markets had to reset that brings us to our current situation.
