So when I'm in a meeting at work with the phone in my pocket and on vib or silence, it'll still make a noise when it accidently pushes the camera shortcut key (which happens a lot to me). I guess it's time to change my BB shortcut key... but what about others who have a regular phone with that shortcut key on the side?

i think i will start setting my ring tone to camera click!

how idiotic. next they will require your phone to play the fallowing message. "warning a picture has been taken. if you have not connected please contact the nearest law enforcement immediately."

Your phone doesn't have a "lock" feature to prevent the phone from responding to accidental button presses??? I lock my phone when I put it in my pocket or in my purse.

It does, but sometimes I forget to lock it. And, other handsets like my previous phone (Sam a950) didn't have a lock option for the camera side key.

What's really dumb is that there is no law that requires digital *cameras* to make a noise when they take a picture.

Mine doesn't, at least.

Yeah, but at least with a digital *camera* other people know that you have a camera, with a cellphone it's not so obvious...

Don't get me wrong, I think it's incredibly stupid and over-reactive to require a sound when your phone takes a picture. Have there been a lot of lawsuits regarding privacy, or something?

And what's a "reasonable distance"?? What if I couldn't hear it across the terminal at the busy, crowded airport? I think that's a reasonable distance! 🙄

I agree with the OP that's dumb. A person could be hiding in a bush with a digital SLR. Not only have they taken a picture of you, but before you realize it, they may have taken hundreds of pictures of you.

At this point in time, I think it's fairly safe to assume that any cell phone you see in use is a camera phone. Yeah, sure, it's not literally true, but it might as well be.

And with digital cameras coming out in smaller and less obvious formats, it's not like you can always tell a camera for what it is.

Privacy...the reason they are making this law is so that if you take a picture people will know. How many websites are out there that are about taking upskirt pics etc. There was even one guy who went so far as to crawl on the floor to take these pics. Most of us are guys who don't wear skirts, but think about your creepy neighbor following the wife to grocery store so he can take pictures of her ass without her knowing, or worse, your daughter.

All of which can be done with credit-card sized cameras and video recorders.

So once again, why pick on cell phones?

Because with a cell phone it's not as obvious it's easiser to disguise, you can't tell if someone is taking a picture or making a phone call. The reason lawmakers is going on about cell phones is because of how fast the technology is expanding. Cameras even credit card size ones for the most part, are pretty obvious, cell phones you never really know. Like I said, why does it really matter unless you are taking pics of things that you don't want the person in them to know.

Uh... cell phones are really obvious too when they're being used to take a picture.

They're at least as obvious as a camera. I'd argue that they're more obvious because they're not being held like your subconscious thinks they should be.

The reason it matters is that government is stepping in to forcibly regulate something that doesn't need to be regulated. There is literally no point to this law, unlike a speed limit which provably saves lives (whether it is mostly ignored or not).

Wow! Thousands of people lost their jobs today and these idiots are sitting there and making these dumb laws. There are other ways of taking a picture of someone without their knowing besides a cell phone. Will those devices have to emit a click sound too?

And how about requiring all photographic devices to emit a "click" sound because how would you know if a person on the street is taking a picture of a monument or sign or bumper sticker or a scantily dressed female on the corner...

Interesting how it's not identity theft, data security, or any other form of digital security that congress spends their time on. I guess it's easier for them to contemplate adding clicking noises for passer-byers than form some sort of government resource like justaskgemalto.com for real digital security/privacy help.
