Sprint Asks Obama to Set Up $2 Billion First-Responder Network

The funny thing is

MarkCohen

That this discussion went exactly how I thought.

AT&T fanboys just randomly attack with little to no (and more often than not the second one) back-up. The VZW people argue that their service is comparable, but it's not for this specific use.

And all those who attack Sprint for this, or say this is like them trying to get their own little bailout are grasping for straws. If any other carrier had proposed the exact same plan, they would have been praised. But because Sprint likes to piss off other carriers with innovation, they get knocked.

So bravo, you follow your formulas.

I'm with vzw and sell vzw and i dont care what company they go with as long as they are committed to getting the job done and making sure their service doesn't turd out. i think that is the reason people are saying to go with att or vzw because they have more broader coverage then sprint. I just want them to use the best because if my arse is in trouble i don't want to have a "oh man my phone don't work cause we have a crappy service and they don't reach here and their trucks are not built for this or that". that is all.

VZW did not construct that coverage. AirTouch née US West Cellular did. Isn't it amazing how broad "your" coverage can be perceived to be when you do not build your own network but just buy out every other carrier in sight?

who cares if they didnt that is how business gets bigger, just like sprint bought nextel and att bought cellone and cingular bought att wireless. so you basically hating on a company because they want to expand? there is reasons vzw is the #1 service coverage, and the #1 customer base. so quit being emotional about the situation and be logical, then go back to your instinct.

you are from Tampa? If you are then you would know that they have the best service in that area hands down.
With capital deployments of more than $49 million throughout Florida to enhance our wireless networks in 2008, including more than $11 million in the greater Tampa area, our networks are ready to deliver their own game-day performance. Sprint enhanced its networks at Raymond James Stadium, throughout Tampa and along Interstate 4 up to Orlando to accommodate the expected increase in voice and data traffic.
The progress that has been made is recent but it doesn't matter what you did last year its all about what have you done for me now

People who wish to learn are always welcome. That is why I am here. But people who don't know QPSK from 16-QAM, an MTA from a CMA, dBi from dBm, PCS from AWS, etc., yet blithely malign & pontificate in this forum (or elsewhere) deserve to be put in their place. I pull no punches in that regard.

Don't believe everything Sprint tells you about their network. As far as the "other guys" being second and third, I am afraid you have that dead wrong. There are very valid reasons why Sprint lost millions of customers last year. If you are losing that many customers, there are serious issues that Sprint hasn't dealt with.

There are 2 valid reasons why Sprint lost customers: 1) Other companies had good marketing schemes and 2) People were dumb enough to believe them.

And jrfdsf is right, Sprint would be getting sued if they didn't have the largest network (like Apple/AT&T are being sued for their tagline: "Double the Speed, Half the Price")

This thread is not particularly germane to the forum topic. Nevertheless, to correct some factual misperceptions...

Nextel iDEN churn has long disproportionately dominated Sprint churn overall. Lost in the macro stats, Sprint CDMA subscribership has actually been increasing.

"The sites would be able to ship the necessary gear to disaster sites anywhere in the continental U.S. within four hours."

Wow! You know, if I'm not mistaken, VZW just happens to be one of the more likely carriers to have service within a disaster site, and they already have plenty of vehicles to deploy to such locations (as well as locations that generally just require more network capacity).

And how is Sprint innovating? If anything, it sounds as though they're just asking for money to save themselves a lot of their own money.

Every time.... you don't submit a business proposal to give stuff away for free do you?

a phone might be free up front, but you get that money back over the course of your service contract

Why is vzw more likely to have coverage? I'm just confused overall at your logic, or lack thereof...

Is that some sort of documented fact? On 9/11, it's not as though communications were knocked out on a city-wide scale or anything. Give me a break.

And are you referring to PTT service, by chance? If so, then I wouldn't be surprised, as I'm sure that more emergency personnel uses Nextel, as it's more established. If you're referring to the general public, then I find that very hard to believe.

I work with Sprint Nextel, and was a top performing manager at VZW.

This solution is unlike any other in the industry as the trucks use a satellite backhaul to connect to the nationwide network. ATT and VZW simply cant do this with any track record or reliability. This solution can be deployed in an area with zero coverage and provide coverage and connectivity to the nationwide network. Consumer solution? Probably Not. First Responder and Major Enterprise customer - No Brainer.

Peace out.
