In this economy, as others have pointed out; Consumers are of the mindset, "Save,Save,Save" and Retailers as well as governments shout "Spend, Spend,Spend it's good for the economy".
There are people who value superior Customer Service. Heck it's what I do. Every person that buys a cellular product from us gets a phone call from me, thanking them; following up, answering questions that weren't answered in the store, trouble shooting problems and otherwise servicing their needs beyond handing them a phone and a car charger and sending them out into the world.
I would spend 5 bucks more on an oil change and drive an extra 10 miles, if the guy was friendly, honest and did a good job as opposed to the jerk 10 mins from my house that complains about working 10 hours a day and smears oil on my fender.
That's just me. If someone wants to save some money and then stand around in shock and disappointment that the sales person doesnt care that you need help or have questions... so be it.
Look at the big picture and choose for yourself... that's the American way. At least in my opinion.
