I really hate this company, in my opinion and experence with them. I hate spam, I hate spam texts even more, I hate American Idol, and combine all of those with AT&T and you've got a room full of hate and bad words.
I think AT&T should be sued for this, and in part of that all the towers have to be allocated to T-Mobile.
SMS is not email and shouldn't have any text that is not wanted.

You are like every other person on this website that complains about everything and is full of hate..If AT&T wants to send a free email out to its customers let them. If you don't want text then call customer service and BLOCK THEM. Why not use there impressive network of customers to promote what they choose to.

FREEDOM OF BUSINESS

no - actually they do not have the right. One must opt-in to receving any information for any purpose, or it is considered unsolicited bulk email/or TEXT in this case. You have to read up on what is what when it comes to this issue. CAN-SPAM2000 - google it.

What they did was leverage their client base to whore out to the television network and get better ratings. ATT sucks shank.

It's the only primarily GSM network. Everyone else is moving on to HSPA like GSM is outdoor plumbing.

HSDPA is Data, and is still distributed through the GSM network. Without GSM/UMTS, HSDPA wouldn't work (Until specific HSDPA towers are built)

Any text sent from AT&T is free no matter what the promotion was or is. and yes AT&T still owns the right send free text to any phone that they choose. There is no law or ordinance against them from doing this. If there was then a company like AT&T would not of done it silly. ๐Ÿคจ

i dont think they would do that. They would send an E-Mail out to E-mail address or send a letter in the mail saying American Idol starts tonight, dont forget to text your vote later on in the season.

some of you are getting mixed up here spam texting isnt from a carrier a carrier or any company that provides you with any type of service has the right to call u (text u in this case) or notify you in any way now if jamster or a company like that was texting your phone(and u didnt subscribe)that would be spam its like your Internet provider calling you to tell them you can upgrade your service att has every right to this until the customer calls into there customer care and tells them to not send them promos i dont work for sprint i work for another carrier and i do promos all day its 100%legal

Verizon sends out spam crap all the time. My wife and friends [who have verizon] get 'messages', even some in spanish. So verizon is a spammer and dumb since they don't even know the language of their subscribers.

wrong, do some research, canspam specifically only applies to email, and canspam doesn't apply to business you have an existing relationship with, if you do have an existing business relationship the only real requirements are that it is clearly an advertisement and that you can opt out.

Read the canspam act.

I did. It only applies if you don't have an existing contract or relationship with the marketing entity. It also says that in the event you do have a pre-existing relationship, an opt-out must be available to you to utilize. This is definately the case whereas AT&T customer care must opt you out of direct marketing notifications if you request it. You can also do it for yourself for spam from other premium content you may or may not have inadvertently signed up for by texting to one of those damned SMS codes. You do so by sending STOP to the same number that was originally texted.

You can't block AT&T SMSes, they don't give you enough granularity of control to block any messages. You can only block all messages.

AT&T should be fined heavily for this.

I'm an AT&T CSR, just call customer service and tell them you want to opt out of carrier solicitations. OR If you don't like hold time just go to wireless.att.com and log into My Wireless Account then click on Profile then scroll down and uncheck the marketing settings then save changes.

I agree with htimsabbub23. AT&T isn't the problem. As an employee (Third Part, of course) I can vouch for the fact that you can call in and request that you not receive Direct Marketing notifications. I did this when I subscribed to AT&T (Before I started working for them). It isn't only AT&T who do this, they're just the most prominate ones because of American Idol. I also oersonally don't like the Idol programs, but I don't sit here and complain about it, or the SMS messages I get pertaining to it.

Spam is Spam, no matter how its sent to you. I give ATT props for their courage in doing this. but i would suggest that they don't do it again..less their customers rise up and smite them.

So I have to ask, are television commercials Spam? We don't ask for them. We spend our hard earned money to PAY for a SERVICE that we ENJOY and USE on a daily basis with television. So stop your complaining!
