Yes, some people still don't have converter boxes. These people are largely lazy and either kept putting it off because they expected someone to buy the box for them, or they just forgot about it.

The boxes are dirt cheap, and digital cable/sat TV both come with boxes if you get the service.

If people don't have their boxes by now, well then they will have to get them or they might go without their locals.... the shame.

They should just get cable, satellite, or fiber tv. So much easier that way and without the blips from bad reception

Aren't they Public airwares no? This probably is affecting mostly seniors who are on a fixed budget with cable/satellite being out of the question. And considering how bad the economy is and how much in toilet investments are cutting back on cable/satellite which is not a necessity is not a bad idea. Though I agree with you that the show must go on, it amazes me of the attitude toward people who feel that everyone should have cable and/or satellite. Hell most of the good shows on tv comes on free tv (Heroes, the Office, Two and a Half Men, 24, Prison Break, etc.)

you don't need cable or satillite but these boxes, even without the vouchers, are sub $100. If you really cannot budget for that, then go without TV for a couple of months until you can. Heck, they've had YEARS to save the money if they really needed it.

So no, not everyone has to pay for their TV service. But they've had plenty of time to make the switch over if they don't want sat or Cable. So that is why I am saying delaying it anymore because people were lazy is not a valid reason. TV is not a right, it is a luxury item. Heck, I don't even have TV at my house because of the prices in the area. I'll lose my "basic" service when the switch goes over. I already have a box so it's a non-issue. This is not some "sudden" transition...

Exactly. $50 per month for basic cable here and all the channels are commercial channels. So basically the whole reason they want you to have television service is so that advertisers can reach you. Nielson ratings are important because it lets advertisers know which shows you are watching and it garners top advertising revenues for those shows. In olden times it was understood that television was "free" because we suffered through commercials. Initially the draw for cable was networks like Showtime, Home Box and the Movie Channel and yeah they splashed some commercial programming in too. Back in the late seventies and early eighties I don't think anyone would have contemplated that consumers would PAY to be advertised to... And yet.....

I agree! Most good shows do come on OTA tv, besides I think most people are busy working or living life to be paying $60+/mo.

I think all cable is good for is national news, documentaries such as Discovery Channel.

Where I live Cox Cable is available, and I think Cox just isn't ambitous enough with HD programing to justify the $$.

it's not really free even when doing air
you still need to get an antenna that can pick up a strong enough signal

In time the price of a digital antenna pays for itself because you don't have monthly payments to make like with cable/sat.

I have been getting digital OTA tv for at least 3yrs, and the are very, very few blips from bad reception, it's just as good a picture as cable, no static, no ghosting.

Yeah. It really depends on where you live. When I lived in Los Angeles back in the eighties "free channels" were every channel on the dial just about and we picked them up clearly with rabbit ears. LOL

No. None of that. It's been a long time since I lived in L.A. but I bet it's even better now. I bet there are plenty of people there who don't pay for cable. In that large a television market why would you?
