If you are talking to someone either on BT, or speakerphone, what is the difference between talking with the passenger?!!? Hands are still on the steering wheel, and eyes are still on the road.

Because the devices are obviously to blame. It can't be that people are terrible drivers no matter what.

What about accidents involving people drinking coffee/tea/juice while in the road? Or accidents involving people who get distracted by the radio/backseat tv? Heck, how many accidents are caused by people being distracted by passengers? should they be banned too?

I'm glad you brought this up. For several years now, I have been part of a special advocacy group regarding the issues of passengers in cars. We have extensive statistics to back up our claim that passengers cause more than 53.67% of deaths in automobile collisions. Will you join us in our government petition to ban all passengers in cars?

There are a lot of idiots who can't drive while talking on a cell phone, but there are a lot more who can. It is only 6% of accidents, if it were closer to a quarter, then sure lets get rid of it, but thats not the case. I agree with no texting or using internet, but talking isnt anyworse that talking to a passenger.

Yep, that's exactly what I'm saying, talking handsfree and talking to a passenger are no different.

the only difference is that while on your bluetooth your not taking your hands off the wheel to do hand gestures to your passenger while your driving why don't they just make cars that when you take your hands off the steering wheel your car shuts off ppl are retarded

More feel good legislation that will have a very limited effect. I can see mandating handsfree devices and outlawing texting or web surfing, but let's get real. It is more dangerous to drink coffee, spill coffee on yourself or sneeze than to talk on a phone with a handsfree device.

I can just see the scenario: you get pulled over and the officer asks; "have you been talking sir?" "Let me see your call log"

There isn't much, really. And besides, how would you enforce it? Will it be illegal to even have a BT headset on in the car? How do you spot it? Those things are getting as small as hearing aids and/or designed to look like jewelry. A phone can be put on speakerphone and placed in a lap, or you can pair it with a BT speakerphone that can clip on a visor or is preinstalled in a car. By the time you pull the violator over, they will have disconnected the call and removed their headset.

I use VZNavigator and Google Maps to navigate when driving, to the point that my GPS unit just sits in the box. So is that banned too?

Excellent point. With technology comes a whole new layer of pros and cons.
I have actually had my laptop open on the passenger seat while driving with google maps up on the screen. But I am being smart in that I am only looking at it when I am stopped at a light. My reason for doing this is on the weekends I photograph kids' sports at locations I have never been to before. Instead of printing out the directions twice a weekend and wasting paper (I won't even open that green can of worms), I would just take the laptop along. The directions were on the screen instead of a piece of paper. Man would the National Safety Council have thrown the book at me!
