I can't beleive these threads. They are trying to save people and prevent terorrists from communicating to each other if some occurs. But everyone seems to be concerned about "what about my rights? what about me me me" Who cares! If it saves people from dying in an attack shut off my cell phone, it's not like they are chaining you down and not allowing you to move. Wow, my parents can't call me and check to see if i a ok and they would prob cry and be scared but if that saves people it is worth it.

I don't trust the government, it will be put through such as you say, and it will be abused. Maybe there was selfish comments, fine, I agree. Now tell me how this will save lives, without goin...

How can it save lives? It can stop terrorists from communicating to each other via cell phones. I'm not saying it WILL prevent an attack from happening but the government is trying to find and implement ways to protect its citizens. Think of it as a football game if you have to: The quarterback(Tom brady cause i dislike him) no longer has his coach feeding him plays or plans on what he wants to do next. Sure the terrorist can still make decisions but he is not getting all the info. I never said this was perfect but in the right situation.. i hope this gets used.

I can tell you how this is going to work, major crime spree, bank robbery etc.. Shut down the cell networks. Riot, potential riots, disturbance, shut down the cell networks. In theory the idea makes some sense. But not in practice.

What? so lets say the riot that jsut happened in oakland,ca... you think they would have shut down the cell network to stop people from thrashing the city?? Bank robbery i could actually see them doing it for but that sounds more of a last resort than just,"oh the bank is robbed, shut down all networks" And it's not shutting down a network at all, its just disrupting them for a specific area so nobody can make calls.

OK, disrupted, they will just use landlines and walkie talkies. I guess whatever makes people "FEEL" safer, and more powers given.

I will bet that 9 chances out of 10 no one knows about an attack until its already done. There may be people trapped and the only way they can get help is to use their cell and call someone. I will assume that more lives will be saved if the cell phone service is NOT blocked or jammed. Plans for attacks are probably well thought out and communicated about BEFORE the initial attack. I'm not being selfish in any way with my statement. If my loved one was in the attack and was trapped, I'd want them to be able to call for help, but hey, maybe that's just me.

Ok, and that 1/10 where they do know theres an attack. They can't do anything to stop it? Disrupt communication? I never once said to shut off all networks AFTER an attack, i just said to disrupt comminication and prevent (before a bomb goes off). So if an attack happens think of it like 9/11... i doubt they would shut off networks, and i wouldnt want them too.

I don't think mobile service would have made much of a difference on any of those American Airlines Jets, as a matter of fact, they skytel phones actually helped out.

Now with this "disruption" every threat they feel is significant, they will use it to shut down service, or what ever you wish to give a nice sanitized name of shutting down service.

wow.... This is my last post because people see what they want to see i guess. I never once said that they should use this if a middle eastern person sneezes like everyone is assuming. I'm just saying if they have intel on a situation and this could prevent or lessen an attack USE IT. I repeat!! I am not saying use this in every single situation. So go ahead and post again saying "the government will abuse this and shut off people's phones and thats going to cause more deaths blah blah"... Yes cell phones can help prevent disasters and have helped in the past, yes people like to be able to call loved ones after an attack... who is saying thats bad?? for the last time i will say: "This would be good in specific situations and not all."

There is no doubt that the Nation's security is top priority. However, In the heat of passion and panic, the first thing that comes to an individual's mind is survival and checking on loved ones...

I would like to add that the terrorist knowing this would most likely use this to their advantage.

Since a lot of anonymous tip offs lead to capture, The first thing the terrorists would do is puposely have the communication cut. This would allow them to roam freely without fear and complete their mission.
