Do you mean AT&T buying BellSouth and taking full ownership of Cingular or Cingular's acquisition of the assets of AT&T Wireless?

AT&T Wireless would have gone bankrupt if it stayed as an independent company. AT&T's acquisition of BellSouth for full ownership of Cingular did not involve a merger of wireless companies.

So, no, not really as much doom and gloom, but many AT&T Wireless customers immediately despised Cingular as it tried to clean up the mess that AT&T Wireless Services got itself into before auctioning off the company, which was a CASH sale.

I agree, I would have rather seen a foreign company buy ATTWS than Cingular. From a business standpoint, Vodafone knew it would cost too much to dump their share of Verizon Wireless to buy ATTWS. It was a good business decision to pass on ATTWS for Voda. I do, however, feel that Cingular did a great job of speeding the migration to GSM and integration. Cingular's migration to GSM was smoother than that of ATTWS, and Cingular migrated ATTWS to Cingular just like it migrated its own TDMA customers to GSM.

I do, however, believe that Cingular bought ATTWS primarily for the spectrum holdings, with the added benefit of getting some customers and a network it could integrate into its own fairly easily.

I'm wondering who is going to ge...
