4G Networks Tested: WiMAX vs. HSPA+
Told you.
I've been using Xtreme Labs Speedtest measuring my iPhone's performance throughout the country on AT&T's network. I've also been using a few web sites to monitor the speed of Sprint's 3G Network.
Also of note:
Sprint's 3G Network is about 1/3rd of the speed of AT&T's. My average on Sprint is 700kbps, my average on AT&T is 2058 kbps. Very rarely do I even break 900kbps on Sprint.
Sprint's WiMax Network isn't significantly faster than T-Mobile and AT&T's 3G Network. - Right now with decent signal from AT&T on the slower 3.2mbps network I beat 4 of the WiMax scores on Sprint's network.
WiMax coverage isn't nearly as solid as HSDPA - Just because an area is "covered" doesn't mean you get a usable signal...

My speed tests for Sprint's 3G Network were done with my Palm Pre using http://testmyiphone.com/ . Go on all you want about them using different antennae and different sources yada yada.

Well, it's more that 4G is simply new technology at the beginning of its lifecycle, while 3G techs are near the end of their lifecycle.
3G started out with technology like WCDMA that only achieved 384 kbps, then it evolved through various upgrades that have brought it all the way up to HSPA+ with 21 Mbps (21,000 kbps). Now there's not much further they can take it without starting over from scratch.
4G is just that: starting over from scratch with a new foundation. What we're seeing now is just version 1 of 4G technology. Yes, there will be future upgrades that boost 4G to higher speed

I'm not saying "We don't need 4G Networks because we have 3G," I'm saying that these 4G networks are starting the race behind 3G, and any investment in a 4G network is foolish on the consumer's end at this time.
Individuals who purchase an HTC Evo won't see better service than individuals on a comparable T-Mo device any time in its lifespan. Not to mention, I think WiMax may be the BetaMax of 4G.

I hear you saying AT&T as well but Rich didn't say anything about AT&T being faster then 4G, he only showed T-Mobile's 3G hspa+ or what ever its called being faster and that was only in certain area's as 4G was only faster then T-mobile in certain area's.
So your really not proving anything.
4G is way and you know it. 3G is at the end of the road so Sprint is already on the bridge to the other side so I don't see any negatives about it. none at all being that Sprint's spotty 4G is faster and STILL cheaper then the rest. So what will be the purpose or excuse for not having...

HSPA+ is not maxed out at 21 Mbps, there have been test networks in Europe (Sweden if I remember correctly) of HSPA+ networks running at 42 Mbps.
The real advantage of 4G technologies is not really the speed, it is the more efficient usage of bandwidth and the capability to support IP based calling. This allows more efficient usage of the limited spectrum.

"Told you". What are you, 10?? One person's results are statistically irrelevant, especially when presented with such obvious bias. Wait until we get some input from thousands of new EVO users, and then well see how 4G stacks up to 3G

One person's results? Try most people's results. The The WSJ and Chicago Tribune also echo these sentiments. So does my personal experience.

I agree with your sentiments but unfortunately your voices is falling on deaf ears. it seems a lot of people on this site don't care about facts because they are blinded by their employers. There is a reason the other carriers can't/don't go after AT&T when it touts itself the fastest 3G carrier in the US because real world network testing shows that it is. I just read an article by PC Mag proving this.
