That fee was just ridiculous... I'm already paying for a new phone and now I have to pay an additional fee? For what?

Good move.

Not only that, you get to pay more for that same phone than a new customer would!

I don't understand this talk about activating a phone, if it's a GSM handset, and your an already existing, you just buy the phone and put your already activated sim card in and your set. GSM handsets don't need to be activated, only sim cards need to be activated.

no company has to spend a lot of time "activating" a phone. Cell companies just want to get a little extra revenue. look at your cable bill there are plenty of BS fees you get charged every month.

Well cellphone companies don't spend a lot of time activating service for customers but it does cost money to do it. So the activation fee is not some random BS charge they feel like charging.

Im not complaining. I believe in a free market. And if people are willing to pay it, then charge it. Until people are leaving your company and going to a competitor due to these fees, my guess is that you will continue to see them.

People always want something for free, and they dont realize that maybe they charge the fee because it allows them to lower the prices on handsets. Trust, T-mobile will make up this fee one way or the other.

"T-mobile will make up this fee one way or the other."

Oh absolutely! About 6 months before they started charging an "Upgrade Fee", they were just adding $18 into the cost of the phone on an upgrade.

If that's true, all those free phones that they had prior to the upgrade fee should have come with an $18 credit??

where is this conversation going?...i know you dont activate a GSM phone..im sure we all know you can just buy a GSM phone and throw ur sim card in it..the point of this whole thing is upgrade fees...some people cant or dont want to pay retail price for a phone and thats why they upgrade for the 2 yr price. the original point for upgrade fees is a lil' cost recovery i believe. some think the 2 yr price is also the retail price. ("sorry sir, this free phone doesnt mean i hand you and your grandma one and you can be on your merry way) but my conclusion is that its good they stopped the $18 fee because they already got ya for 2 years and if you cancel before then theres always the $200 per line on ya a$$....

You are paying abour 20% of a new phone, not a new phone outright.

I do agree that upgrade fees are kinda stupid, but I'm also tired of people paying 70-100 for a high end phone and thinking they are actually buying it outright.

Yea and you are also paying a monthly bill!!!!

Which is where they make their money back..

right, you are paying for service.

The only way they can make their money back on the phone is if you commit to a full 2 year agreement. and that is assuming you get a basic phone. If you get a higher end phone and don't get any data/text messaging packages, they could be loosing money.

Operating a network is very expensive, especially in the states where taxes and regulations are insane.

...sure that's where they make their money back. Cell phone companies are nothing but rich fat-cats, lol

That must explain why Verizon Wireless is paying $5.9 billion and assuming $22.2 billion of Alltel's debt. Emphasis on the $22.2 billion debt.

It cost money to run a well working network. These little fees as much as people complain go along way to offer, better service, better handsets(at a reasonable price) and reasonable price plans.

So if people want to leave, go ahead and leave; we'll see you in 2yrs when you realized you just downgraded on your network.
