Unfortunately, my experience with the Sprint 4G network was less than satisfactory.

When it worked well, Sprint's 4G network offered fast, high quality video streaming from YouTube, faster Web browsing and, eventually, even video conferencing, a first for a device in the U.S. But most of the time it did not work well, and it couldn't even top the 3G speeds I saw on my Google Nexus One. Sprint says this will gradually improve, but until the WiMAX network is reliably much faster than the 3G options out there, does Sprint have a right to charge $10 extra per month for the privilege of using the HTC Evo 4G? It's a catch 22, since more revenue means a better network down the road, but the network isn't good enough to be worth the extra money ...

They already have over 2 million sign ups on the EVO page.... I know its not a actual order, but i think there is still massive interest.

Sprints 3G vs. Verizons 3G = comparable

Sprints 4g vs. Verizons 4G = oh wait, there is none for Verizon

Sprint wins, k thanks bye.

😉 No actually a big fan of Sprint and props for rushing out the first 4G network. It doesn't matter that I don't like it, or that you think it's Gods give to the cellular world.

Will it help Sprint is the real question.

But bask away!

Cell, you should know that if you EVER say anything NON-NEGATIVE about verizon, you're obviously just one of their fanboys.

I think the bigger issue is critizing the Evo soley on the unavailability of WiMAX. Take WiMAX away and the Evo is still an amazing device, and the extra $10 still makes it a good value for the plan.

Furthermore it's been said a hundred times, the $10 is for truly unlimited 3G and 4G ("premium" data) since it's been shown that without *true* unlimited 3G it is not hard to cruise past 5GB on this thing even without the hotspot feature.

Help me understand, Dan Hesse! How can you charge me for something that I can't use?

Your quote at CTIA 2010:

"4G, we can offer because we can produce a gigabyte cheaper, we actually offer more. A good analogy that has been used for 4G, and 3G, and 2G, is kind of moving from Dial-up data at home, to low speed DSL, to a cable modem and then to faster speeds. Or in TV terms, standard def versus high def, but if you looked at those models, you paid more for faster speeds. You paid more for the HD channels. In essence what we're doing with 4G is we're throwing in the HD channels for free, because we're not charging any more and we're giving customer's more."

Wow. You must have a lot of time on your hands!

Do you also have a website for the $10 that Verizon Wireless now charges on ALMOST ALL of their phones??

It's not almost all, It's only feature phones. This excludes smartphones (which require data on every network) and basic phones, of which there are 12+ phones to choose from.

And if you actually looked at Cell's post, you would see their Gravatar is from one of the many sites that sprang up hating the $10 change)

The phones that require data:
LG EnV3
LG EnV Touch
Samsung Reality
LG 8360 (LOL, like people would buy it now)
LG Chocolate Touch
Casio Brigade
(You can put the alias2 or rogue here.. but Good luck finding a store that offers them)

Phones that don't:
LG Accolade
Samsung Smooth
Motorola Entice
LG Cosmos (Full QWERTY)
Samsung Intensity (Full QWERTY)
Casio Rock (waterproof)
Motorola Barrage
Samsung Convoy

I did look at Cell's post.

Didn't know what a "gravatar" is, so I googled it.

Still not sure how a little icon was supposed to tell me anything about his website.

Feel free to correct me if I'm wrong, but if you add the VZW phones that require a $30 data plan to your list, then there are far more phones require an extra feature than ones that don't. I simply meant that I think it's crazy to charge $10 for data on phones that aren't actually true data devices.

I see some people bitching bout the add on fees. I notice we have not heard from the Rotten Apple FanBoys. Look at AT&t, to have an iPhone you have to have a current plan from $59.99 up, then there is the $30.00 REQUIRED iPhone plan, and that still does not include messaging. To get the unlimited messaging it is $20.00 a month.

I know right!?!

I still can't get over the stink about the $10 for the Evo.

News flash! Sprint doesn't charge you extra for data, or nav, or tv, or texting, or nights starting at 7 pm....... The list goes on and on.

Menno your post is misleading. I say this because by listing them as you did it appears that you would think it is ok, that a carrier can charge $10 for every touch screen texting device and it is ok. What if you have a daughter/son that does not get on the web, but you want her to a have an up to date texting/touchscreen device? Well, I will tell you, you will still have to pay for 25MB of web and email data for 9.99. Even if you wanted to block it, not allowing her to use it. It is a REQUIREMENT, there is no longer a way to have the data blocked. WHY? is that ok, but for a phone such as the EVO you have all been crying about the same type of charge. WHY? When all of the legit info stats that it is not only for 4G, but also for QIK, etc. E...

Agreed. No matter how you slice and dice it, it's a completely reasonable price to pay for what you are getting. If you aren't comfortable paying for it, go get yourself some old school phone without modern speed. 🙄
