Let me get this straight. GSM is better positioned for LTE at a couple of years away, yet Verizon is just going to push this thing out there?. Hmmmm. My guess is that it will be a "watered down" version just to somewhat remain in the game. ATT is rolling out HSPA and Sprint Wimax. What does Verizon have? It is probably going to be used to retain consumers demanding a higher speed. In essence: Hey Everybody, Why go with Wimax or HSPA? look what we have! That's my take.

I agree 100%. The technology has barely been tested and here comes big mouth claiming to have a network in a year. Gosh, I can't stand Verizon. If Verizon was to be a celebrity, it will def be Kanye West.

Verizon said early last year whenever they announced they would go to LTE that they expected to have the first networks deployed in 09. this isnt new.

yeah i love how these people are crying already about a future dated network enhancement we announced last year , feb 07.

sad people will find any reason to hate the best.

yea, there just mad that there networks cant keep up the pace with Verizon.. Wont be the first.. like when 3G came out, Verizon was the first.

Now there going to be the first with LTE.. and notice AT&T said it this year AFTER Verizon. AT&T has too much work to do on:

1. Coverage. No service out West: MT, ND, SD, NB, ect.

2. 3G Network. It sucks, its not in enought places to even think about LTE yet.

They said they would begin rolling it out. It will take years until the network is strong enough for a total shift over.

Starting now means that they can spread the costs over several years. Expect it in some of the larger cities first, then generally growing from them.

Verizon has been testing LTE all year in IL...

Interesting take... So exactly what are you saying? This isn't really going to happen? Or Verizon does not have the right to launch LTE because they are a CDMA carrier? I don't see the problem with building handsets which have CDMA(850, 1900) AND LTE(700)radios built in. Do you object to this?

I in no way object to what you said and it would be great to have and my take is only an opinion.
But since LTE is the natural path for GSM, I find it inconceivable that a CDMA carrier would be able to access a fully loaded LTE before a GSM carrier. I feel it is not the LTE as it will be in a couple of years. My "opinion" is that will be an extremely underpowered version that they are slapping over their network as a bandaid to buy time. Hence my thought they are just trying to divert attention away from WiMax and HSPA. Which is my next theory: Why waste time and money building out HSPA if indeed LTE was this far ready for deployment? Just a question.

Technically, the WiMax Sprint/Clearwire is rolling out is an "underpowered" version of what it's capable of.

LTE is a new technology. I don't find it inconceivable that VZW would be able to deploy "full" LTE before a GSM carrier if they are set on it. Some Canadian CDMA carriers have stated they are going to deploy UMTS before transitioning to LTE. UMTS isn't on the CDMA upgrade path, either. So long as the chipsets are available and any two technologies aren't tied together, I don't think it matter WHAT technology a carrier chooses.

And what is VZW buying time for? Qualcomm has abandoned R&D on UMB, which was supposed to the CDMA upgrade path equivalent of LTE.

I am in agreement with you, But I do feel WiMax is a threat that Verizon takes seriously. More than what they wanted to lead on. This is why the all of a sudden push. I also find the hypocritical hogwash of Qualcomm to have affected my view of them being involved with LTE. Hence the reason nobody(unfortunately)would buy into UMB. They simply lost clout. UMB in fact was technically more superior to LTE. Also Wimax may indeed be underpowered but the 2.5Ghz spectrum should make it a be a better data transfer than 700Mhz. Do you not agree?

I certainly think WiMax can be, and is, a threat. However, the choice to use 2.5 GHz for service will certainly restrict the size of the network depending on the number of sites deployed. While the higher frequency will certainly permit higher data rates (as well as have the signal "die" faster, causing less interference between neighboring sectors), I think VZW learned from their EVDO deployment in PCS. The difference in speed between the 2.5 GHz and the 700 MHz I think will be negligible on the overall speed of things (average data rates may be 20 Mbps instead of 25-30 Mbps....still extremely quick), and the number of sites necessary to build out a network of equal or greater coverage area compared to their 1x network will be MUCH less.
