If you think it is a dumb idea, then you obviously have no idea how to run a profitable business. This will help cut down costs. It will provide more indepth knowledge of the specific devices for us the consumer. Id bet dollars to say this move will help att and its customers in the future. We'll just have to wait 6 more years to see.

A universal platform is a great idea. Good thing there's so many out there: Android, Open Moko OS, Symbian OS, various Linux distributions...
Maybe AT&T will make it work by adding the features people want, such as fifteen buttons to connect to the AT&T Mall, direct access to the AT&T Mall from ten Media Net buttons, and protection from free applications like Blackberry Maps. They could also restrict the device so AT&T Mall was the only source for software. There's no way this could fail.

What the hell device takes 15 buttons to connect to ATT Mall? It sounds like you're just finding something to bitch about. Lets wait and see what happens before we all get up in arms about it. Read the thread i started, I explain my point of view there.

I am very sorry you don't understand the concept of sarcasm; here's a link to an article you should read to get a better grasp of the subject:

As for your post, I did read it before I posted. Here's my point:
There are many quality phone operating systems on the market. No matter which one AT&T chooses, it will degrade and lock the system. It will add icons to buy games, buy music, buy ringtones, and otherwise take a dump on the programing. Which would be fine, but with the hardware advances coming to market in the next 5 years (multi-core phone CPUs, very cheap flash memory, 4-G internet standards, enhanced video capture) phones are going to become ultra portable computers. What effect would AT&T's l...

Well why didn't you just say that in the first place. LOL I see what you are saying. I really hope that ATT doesn't lock down the devices. If they go with an open source platform like Symbian, they should keep it open with enhanced features and keep it customizable. I guess we'll just have to wait and see. It would be a terrible loss if ATT booted BB if they didn't make a Symbian based phone. And why would the precious fu**in Ijunk not have to convert. That makes no sense to me. I guess I'll never understand ATTs obsession with APL. Id take a BOLD over and Ijunk any day. (sorry, I felt like ranting for a little bit)

ok then why cant they have a tech team for winmo, bbry, etc. then just have the regular tech support for symbian. i would agree alot of people dont know how to use pda phones, but they have not been in the market long enough to make a decision for this. I think people will learn how to use a pda eventually, an example is computers. Most people over the age of 30 know how to use a computer. I just think it will take time.

So my idea is a tech support and then a advanced tech support (im pretty sure alltel has this)
