Here's why it's a good- no, *GREAT* idea

When they say "smartphones" here, I'm guessing they're not referring to enterprise devices, which have specific development platforms intimately intertwined with their core functionality (ie - corporate email & app support). Windows Mobile isn't going away anytime soon, and it's very unlikely Blackberry is either.

Rather, what I'm guessing is that there's going to be a move to make *all* phones "smartphones". It's not unlike Verizon's uniform UI - all phones will have the same software platform. Think about this: the Samsung Propel, Eternity & Access; the Pantech Slate & Matrix; the LG VU; the Quickfire. These are all phones that require more of a complicated software stack, but it's still buried in a proprietary UI. In fact, with th...

Well maybe they should standardize their dumbphone lineup but they should leave the smartphones alone. I do not see why they cannot just departmentalize Blackberry OS, WinMo, and Symbian.

Because it would cost too much money. It all comes back to money. Its much much much much cheaper to standardize the platforms then to hire specialists.

I hear ya Haley but as a customer looking in? I have to tell you that while Att and Verizon are spending Billions and Bilions snatching up other carriers, they relinquish the training to their employees. Employees work around phones every day and should know not only the phones they sell but also how they operate. It is their job! Nothing urks me more than showing a Rep how to use a device. I am just a customer. I had one Rep say to me "Wow, you've really done your homework" I felt like saying: yeah, well maybe you should have too!. This proposal is like forcing someone out of their BMW into a Ford. It has an engine, power windows, AC and so forth which means no one sould care. Right? This is just crazy.

You make a good point. Competition and choice is what makes the US so gerat. Take that away and you might have a fight on your hands. I hold a management possision with a wireless provider and nothing irritates me more then when a customer tells me what you just said. You're right anyone who is in sell phones should know thier products and how to use them. I spend more time researching and learning about devices then I probably to do selling them. But still, Im sure ATT corporate is concerned more with the bottom line and staying in the black then anything else. We'll just have to wait and see what happens with this.

P.S. Whats wrong with Ford anyway? Ive owned many Fords and I dont have too many complaints.

You know ... I agree with this.

Shooot while we are on the topic, we should only have one computer operating system. One type of internet browser.

Hell ... we should only have one type of car and one type of snowboard. We should also have only one type of video game system ...

... why have all of these different DVD and Blue Ray players? Why so many TV options? Houses are so complex these days with different styles and design and floor plans.

A congressman back in the 1970s tried to standardize cereal because there was soooo many and it would confuse the public!

... yeah. dumb idea.

I feel the same way when it comes to smartphones. I just think that standardizing the dumbphones makes the most since while keeping the 3 or 4 platforms for smartphones. These customers are usually diehards for their favorite OS. Plus, the development of programs for smartphone OS's is huge. I just think the more competition, the better for the industry and consumers. Why not just put forth agreements with the OS developers to troubleshoot and stop putting on all their carrier bloatware which is probably the main reason these devices function improperly.
