y would you want this at 640 x 360 pixels!

Yes, it has better dpi, but that is irrelevant after a certain point. Can your eyes differentiate each tiny pixel?

However, the X1 is still better to the N97. It has 7.2 HSDPA (3.6 on N97[really nokia?]), better resolution, and US compatible Tri-band HSDPA [850/1900/2100 on X1 vs. 900/1900/2100 on N97],

However, the N97 has 32GB on-board[what could you possibly use that much for?], 5MP camera, Compass, accelerometer, and it tilts. But yea, its a bummer they dont offer NA version [and they dont have to, which american carrier has guts to get high-end nokia phones]

Eric, where did you find out that the N97's data is 3.6 and not 7.2? cause I donwloaded the pdf, and I didn't see any mention of it's HSDPA capabilites, I'd very much like to know also if it is 1.8 HSUPA.

Also, where did you confirm that it has an accelorometer?

here's a comparison. There is no mention of HSUPA anywhere for both phones, so I do not know.

Yeah, yeah, I clicked on the link. Let's reserve judgement for a little while considering it actually hasn't reached any reviewers hands, and is still quite a few months away, it is very possible that there are some specs that aren't finalized.

I am very excited about the prospect of having a handset that has handwriting recognition, I think that's a really cool feature.

And I like the digital compass idea they have for the N97. 1500mAh battery is good too, but of course I'll have to get extra batteries and desktop chargers, just as I have for my N95 because I just can't leave my phone untouched for very long, and I used a lot of battery life, so hopefully there will be desktop chargers for the N97 just as there are for the N95.

๐Ÿ™„ The phone isn't out yet, they don't offer any version yet. Speaking of which, your precious SE Xperia comes in THREE DIFFERENT models w/varying UMTS support, and I don't recall seeing a U.S. carrier picking up the Xperia either....

so you can embarrass yourself by showing pictues, video and music to your friend with that 640x360 resolutions? your friends will laugh at you with their Sony X1 showing stuffs at 800x480!, that' like Hi-Def compares to this nokia junk!

Um, just because the display is 640x360 px doesn't mean all the content is. You can fit some pretty large videos onto that 32 GB of space.

Speaking of videos fitting onto that 32GB's of space, are there any perticular programs you recommend to convert a DVD to a format (H.264?) that will playback on the N97. Damn I wish there were a way to convert Blu-Ray's, I have over 70 Blu-Ray's already.

I think I will use a majority of the 32gigs for movies, and an 8gb card that I already own for music & pix.

Do you intend on getting the N97 NAM when it comes out? I'm a current owner of the N95-3, theres a good chance I'll get it, I might actually start saving up for it next payday! A 3.5in screen definetly makes it viable to watch movies on. I'll have to get a program to convert DVDs to a format the N97 can play, H.264 I think. And it has handwriting recognition, I think that is so, so cool!

Passing judgement on a phone simply because of it's pixel density is not only petty but shortsighted. Remember that the screen size is about the same as the Xperia, so the N97 is going to be much easier to read on. True, it's less dense than a home monitor, but it's not a home monitor, is it?

If you want to squint at a screen more often, go ahead. I've yet to replace my now ancient N75 (with it's senior citizen friendly 240x320 display), and I'm in no hurry: phone displays aren't growing that fast, and websites aren't getting any less dense.

....I couldn't agree more! Not to mention - this phone is no slouch when it comes to pixel density! Not sure why these specs would be considered a legit gripe! Especially when most (if not all - not sure) Nokia's screens are 24-bit vs the popular 16/18-bit screens on everything else! ๐Ÿ˜Ž

*** N97 = Symbian S60
*** X1 = Windows Mobile (the mere fact that the X1 is a Windows Mobile device is all the reason I need to avoid it!)

*** N97 = 24 bit/16.7 MILLION COLORS!
*** X1 = 16 bit/65K colors (your precious 800 x 480 screen resolution just tripped at the finish line by goin' with a 16 bit screen!)

*** N97 = 3.5" screen
*** X1 = 3" screen

*** N97 = 5 megapixel Carl Zeiss cam
*** X1 = 3.2 megapixel cam

*** N97 = 32 GB
*** X1 = 400 MB

...any questions? ๐Ÿ˜Ž

Not to mention the user interface on the n97 looks much more cool than previous n96/n95 phones. There seems to be widgets and stuff on the home screen that you can customize. Now, if they did make a 'complete' US[North America] version [850/1900/1700], it will be perfect. Afterall, Nokia did help T-Mo usa upgrade their network to 3g.
