Is it AT&T's software or Pantech?

I know AT&T always has a say, but comparing the software from a Pantech AT&T device to, say the Samsung Strive, it's pretty different.

I always figured it had more to do with the manufacturer, unlike Verizon (I'm not sure about their current ones), where every phone had that same menu styling.

Both. Yes, the manufacturer probably does most of the work, but with a device like this, they are building to AT&T's spec.

It's up to AT&T to mandate a good browser, good messaging client, and good social networking features. If they were smart, they'd standardize this with a standard (good) software suite, at least for manufacturers that aren't stepping up on their own.

I think this inconsistency is why AT&T is adopting BREW MP. It will standardize the platform a bit more so AT&T can mandate a (specific) good messaging client, social networking client, etc. and manufacturers will be able to drop such software into their phones much more easily.

...in theory. How well AT&T executes on this remains to be seen, of course.
