Carriers need to stop making decisions for consumers!

One of the wisest business strategies I have ever heard is "Let the market decide whether or not something will succeed" Consumers know what is best for consumers. That's why Google made Android's code open, because they know that the collective ideas of the world will make Android better than Google would.

This article about Sprint is a perfect example as to why I enjoy FREEDOM being on a GSM carrier (AT&T) I can use any unlocked GSM phone in the world on AT&T's network, they don't make decisions for me as to which handsets I can, or can't have.

The market WILL decide. If the market wants the G1, they will buy it unlocked or leave their current cariers to do it. Sprint has made their decision to wait until they think Android is a stable platform and can compete and be compatible with other systems from their network.
If Android is a huge success, sprint will look foolish for waiting. If Android flops or has serious problems, Sprint's going to look brilliant .

Well over a million G1's have been pre-ordered/sold, I'd call that a success. And because Android is open, it's in the hands of developers and coders to help it succeed.

I understand about that success, but you must give marketing a big chunk of credit for that. If sales end up plummating after the hype then we will know the truth.

Exactly. Just because there have been 1 million (which is an outlandish number but thats beside the point) preorders doesn't mean that the unit is an automatic success. All that means is there is alot of hype and hope for this OS. I still think Sprint is foolish for daring to call anything 'not good enough' considering thier current position. But who knows, waiting patiently may pay off for them in the end. Very few, if any, things in the world of technology are anywhere near as good in the first generation as they are in (sometimes distant) future generations.

HTC just released new figures for it G1 sales forecast and now they are saying 600,000 sold by the end of the year. I also saw the artical a week or so ago stating over a mill per-ordered but that does not seem to be the case unless they count units that have left their warehouse as Apple does.

I also wish Hesse would have elaborated a little more as to what improvments/changes he wants to see made before Sprint will launch an Android device. He choice of words could have been better.

Yes you can unlock the G1 BUT the phone willl not work with another carrier other then t-mobile. the phone is REQUIRED a data plan of either 35.99 or 24.99 extra a month to even access the menu screens. without the phone is just a paper weight.

Consumers don't need to pick phones either, because they expect too much from a machine. I can see some people asking for a phone that wiped their noses and made breakfast. I'm sure that would be nice but my point is people expect too much from the phones and want to pay next to nothing.

Yep, I have very high standards!!! That's why I haven't bought a phone from Cingular/ATT in over 3yrs, no phone is good enough for me, I want a cameraphone I can actually use ar a camera, I want a music phone I can actually use for music (3.5mm headphone jack), so that is why I own the Nokia N95-3, the best of all worlds.

And !YES! I am willing to pay for a phone that is WORTH having, that has features I can USE.

Freedom of being with AT&T, I can use any unlocked GSM phone in the world.

That's cool, but you're one of the few people that would be willing to pay for a product that would do everything they liked it to do. I work with these people everyday. The expect PDA'S for nothing.

No Htc phone has 3.5mm headphone jacks but most have video cams and media players as well as good application built in. You just got ripped off big time! Walmart is even selling them cheaper than t-mobile. You say u want phone that does everything. How did u end up with a g1. 🤨 No video, no active sync, no live tv, and no built in games or player. So much for a phone that does everthing ☹️

The problem with your argument is that if the Android platform doesn't perform well the consumers won't be upset at Google, htc, moto, samsung, ...

no they won't, because it won't be crashing on the sprint network.

Oh wait a minute, I just remembered....

According to most people on these forums,

Everything is sprint's fault.
The phone will crash because it's not on any sprint phones yet

I agree Sprint should release and Android phone soon but also think they shouldn't put out such trash like t-mobile with there g1. Google and Htc are both reliable companies but t-mobile always seems to ruin everything they touch! Especially there phones they all stink. The wing, the dash, the shadow lol you know they cant even keep up with the competition. They are going to give the Android a bad name if Google doesn't do something quick. This would explain why the demand for the g1 has been so high this is really the best phone to ever hit t-mobile. Sadly its not even better than the iphone or the instinct. Google wants to release a Sprint phone but it need to be able to rival phones Sprint already has otherwise it wont be profitable for S...

The Android platform is an exciting alternative to challenge Microsoft's mediocre offerings.

The G-1 is selling very well because it's a fresh approach to cell phone operating systems. If an ugly phone (yea,it's not a piece of artwork like the iphone 🤣 ) can sell so well, it's because Android works.

Android has all the usual problems they would expect to have with a BRAND NEW OS. But the difference is, Google seems committed to making it work well. They already have OS updates out even now. I waited over a year for a crappy OS update for my Palm. Google is doing them within days of a release!
Microsoft should be worried.

Always entertaining how you only trash t-mobile. For someone who claims to test phones for a living, you see...
