Actually, that was Sprint saying that we would no longer extend contracts for rate plan changes last November (11-2007). I can confidently say that as a Sprint Nextel customer service rep. 🙂

No kidding. I hope other carriers adopt the same. If not, then it just makes Sprint Nextel just that much better than other companies. 😁

verizon and att have been doing this for almost a year. Sprint is behind the 8-ball on this one.

not sure why the employees and fan boys are getting so mushy about this. all the other carriers have been doing this for over a year now.

welcome to the party misguided sprint/nextel employees.

Verizon began Nov '06. AT&T began May '08. Sprint said last Oct or Nov they would start doing it early '08. T-Mob I believe has something that decreases the amount over 6 month intervals. Welcome Sprint, late as usual and on top of that still a higher starting ETF at $200.

i still dont see why this is a huge deal? the customer signs the contract saying they will pay the $200 if they cancel before the end of the contract. Its a binding legal contract that if THEY break they should have to pay and then when they do break it they bitch about having to pay for it???

i agree. i just hope you dont get flamed for saying this by the same people who say that the reason why they want prorated ETF fees is because phone companies charge the fees to deter people from cancelling. the real reason behind ETF fees are so you (the consumer) doesn't have to pay 500- 600 dollars for a nice phone. its given at a discount. if people keep making complaints about ETF fees and they go away you are going to see how many complain that phones cost too much, people need to see both parts of the store before they complain about cancellation fees.

agreed people (the consumer) have no idea how much money the phone carriers lose in selling the phones at the prices they do, because ur in that contract but if contracts go away their gonna be forced to sells phones at the full retail price, hence no more discounts on phones...

Actually, I'm pretty sure Alltel doesn't do this yet. ☹️ I really like Alltel's services but they do have a few things that are customer-unfriendly.

No, Sprint actually said they were going to adopt Prorated ETFs back in 2007 sometime "soon." It just took a successful lawsuit to force Sprint to actually do it.

Gosh I wish Tmo would adopt that, I've been researching them, you can't make changes to your acct with them without a contract extension.

I swear that business practice is so, so evil, contracts are suppose to be for equipment upgrades only. It is that one thing that prevents me from giving T-Mobile further consideration. Other than AT&T, T-Mobile is the only other company I'd ever consider. I'm too good of a consumer for either Spring or Verizon.

Thats hilarious. You think you are too good of a consumer for VZW, the most pro-customer of the nationwide cellular services in the US.

I agree, that was a stupid statement. Thats like saying you are too good for dominoes pizza when you prefer papa johns or pizza hut etc etc. Just because you like taking it in the rear from a certain provider doesn't mean you are too good for ****.

I still have the PDF of the press release where Sprint said last december that we had done away with contract extensions on plan changes as of 11-12-2007, and by the summer of 08 we anticipated having a prorated ETF program in effect as well as other "exciting" customer incentive programs to be rolled out. At that point we had done away with the extensions already, and the only customer incentive rollout i've seen is the Sprint(formerly Nextel) Premiere Customer Program where youre offered a full upgrade after one year if your qualify.
