What is Sprint going to do? Make Wimax phones that also run on LTE? Their whole strategy, and company, is doomed.

While WiMAX looks like a phone technology, what if they use it as a mobile broadband service to computers? Think of it like competition to Cable, DSL, and Dialup.

Remember, all the 4G technologies are IP-based. So in essence, you would be making a phonecall over the internet.

Your post sounds like WiMax is wireless broadband for laptops but LTE, or even HSPA+ isn't for laptops, that's just the impression I got that only WiMax is for laptops.

It does not require a contract which is huge advantage over LTE or any other cellular/broadband alternative and is about half the price of current 3G data card plans. Intel is now shipping its first-ever combined WiMAX/Wi-Fi chipset and WiMAX based notebooks can be purchased on Amazon and newegg right now. WiMAX will allow Sprint to reach more than just the mobile phone industry with every day consumer electronic like MP3 players and Navigation systems also using the service. The fact that they will have at least a two year head start is also a huge advantage. The fact that Sprint will be selling XOHM through an MVNO structu...

"To keep connected while on-the-go, a number of Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP) and Instant Messaging (IM) clients are available, including Skype(TM), Google Talk(TM), and Gizmo5, which can also take advantage of the Nokia N810 WiMAX Edition's built-in web cam for video calls."

Sometimes the nail can be a useful tool as in nailing a lead to the technology. LTE may glitter more than Wimax on paper. But several things are worth mentioning:

1). As mentioned, Sprint is deploying this type of technology ahead of everyone else.
2). Wimax is proven overseas and is solid. Most bugs have been exterminated. LTE is nowhere instituted on real scale basis. I am sure there will be issues upon delivery delaying rollout.
3). Sprint/Clearwire hold a huge amount of spectrum for Wimax. This will greatly enhance coverage to most of the US population and beyond. This will eliminate roaming charges to other carriers. The savings for Sprint will be nothing short of astronomical. This will trickle down to end users! 😁
