1700??
T-Mobile 3G is great, but why can't they use 1900 for 3G like all the other US carriers. This way I can't use my unlocked AT&T phone on their network.
...
My co-worker was complaining about the same thing when we found out like a year ago. I've read reviews from people in New York about average connection rate being faster with T-mobile 3G compared to ATT, which could be related to it being on a different frequency.
The other cool thing is when phones get announced.. Even if they haven't announced what company it's intended for, if they have the 1700MHz band, then it's as good as seeing the T-mobile logo on a phone picture.

Because T-Mobile has a limited amount of spectrum... not enough to deploy 3G and GSM.
AT&T is running into spectrum issues in many markets (hint any dropped calls on 3G?). I have this issue in Los Angeles.

Thats because 1700 is a better band for 3g. So it will be quicker and don't have to worry as much about network traffic. 1700 is also what they use overseas so just get a phone from Europe.
...
Please tell me where in Europe they're using 1700? I know Canada has recently opened it up. But not Europe.
They use 2100umts and its not the same as what TM here is using. You might get a nice unlocked phone from Europe, but you will using it on edge.

if they could, they would
but they can't (not enough spectrum, WCDMA requires 10MHz spectrum at least)
NYC market only has 20MHz of 1900 spectrum, if T-Mobile deploys UMTS on this band, both 2G and 3G will crumble
FCC offered AWS/WCDMA IV, and this is ONLY choice
get it or nothing

i don't get the mhz limitation. can somebody explain a bit more?
i don't think making NYC as the base of frequency is reasonable to make the other states suffer to with the infamous 1700 mhz. can't they just have a special band for that area like the t-mo 850 on the some central and most east coast?
how come most european and asian networks can share the 1800/2100 together with their competitor networks while att and t-mo can't share?
...
Because it's not really cost effective to make a specific Freq. for New York. All phone manufactors would have to add that into their phones just for one city....it's also just not logical.
