Verizon Launches BlackBerry Storm Teaser Page
GSM Version
I don't know about you but to me "Global Capabilities" means that it will also take a Sim card to be compatible with GSM networks worldwide...I could be wrong but I don't see how else they would accomplish this.
If this is true, then it's only a matter of time till someone figures out how to unlock it and make it work without having Verizon service.
Im not saying its not possible, but its prolly trickier than you think. And if the correct bands arent in there, hacking wont do you any good.
And hacking a phone doesnt mean its the "att version"....its means a pirated version of a verizon phone.

Not saying that your wrong. Only time will tell....
As a side note: I didn't realize people really cared that much what the carrier label says on the phone. If it works on the provider, does it really matter? Other than being able to get it at a subsidized price, I don't see the difference. ๐คจ
You would have to be a true tech junkie to pull that stunt. Plus they are getting the bold soon, so people will be preoccupied with that anyway.
I think it's safe to say that the majority of the people who regularly visit this site have enough knowledge in cell phones to input an unlock code or install minor software mods to the phone from the computer (if it ends up being that easy)

yeah, cause how many people have done that with the 8830 which is also a world phone?

Sorry, Chris- you know i like you but I'm gonna have to shoot you down on this one.
The RIM 8830 is a CDMA + DUAL BAND device. It lacks the Quad-band capabilities that power the North American GSM spectrum. You can't unlock and 8830 for use on USA GSM because it only has European GSM/Asian GSM/CDMA radios in it. That's why VZW roaming coverage in Mexico sucks even with the RIM 8830- all you can get down there are the CDMA channels!
The Storm is listed as a Quad-band device, so I'm sure there will be few folks out there looking to jailbreak/unlock it for AT&T or T-mobile use. The best protect...

The US isn't the only country that uses the 850/1900MHz Freq.
The 850 band isn't a must.
I used a tri band Sharp V903 that by the way didn't have GSM 850 band, and it worked just fine on AT&T's network.
And by the way with reguards to this "global capabilities", Verizon & Vodafone are one company, likely they're planning something involving both companies, hence is the reason Verizon chose LTE, cause Vodafone made them do it, as part of a future migration of the 2 companies, my personally prediction is they to compete with ATT on a much more global scale

Oh. I'm just trying to prove a phone doesn't have to be quad band to work on ATT's network, that's all.

VZW and Vodafone will likely be the best of friends for many, many years to come- but they can never become one company:

As for WHY Verizon chose to go the LTE route,...

As CDMA is actually the newer more advanced technology over GSM, UMB is even better and more advanced than LTE. Too bad Qualcomm's tarnished reputation killed all interests in UMB. But here is where you are right: all three technologies are roughly 85 percent the same making them far more compatible with each other in comparison to GSM and CDMA. The reason Verizon and other companies have made the switch...

verion exclusive in the U.S. only chance for att would be using an unlocked euro version (and even that prolly wouldnt work too well.)
Yes and no. RIM usually only grants 60-120 day exclusives. If AT&T decides to pick this phone up, you probably will see it sometime next spring or early summer. And even sooner in the wild in the unlocked market.
I really doubt RIM isn't going to come out with a non-gsm version of this phone, but with RIM you never know if it will be hsdpa or not?
Blackberry is doing carrier specific phones now in their down time.
The last phones they made was the Pearl and Curve with all it's variants.
So we are starting to see the AT&T Bold Exclusive
The T-mobile Pearl Flip Exclusive
The Verizon Storm Exclusive
Verizon's will be Quad band along with some other coming global phone and yes you could unlock these and use them on AT&T if you wanted to, but it will probably be GSM/GPRS in the US GSM band. With no EDGE or 3G, what's the point? Web Browsing? No Visual Voicemail? You'd have crappy GSM service on a cool phone where you couldn't use any of the fea...
