I don't get the importance...

Isn't this out-dated? With all the "high-tech" phones out now, is there truly ANY benefit in having IM? Wouldn't it be more convenient to simply "text"?

I always had PDAs and having a yahoo or AIM client on my PDA is great. Not everyone I talk to texts so this is a great option for me and well all of the people I know with PDAs because they all use clients like this.

IM's don't cost 10cents/msg to send, and you can chat with your nerdy friends on their computer who might have left their phone upstairs.

I already get my AOL mail pushed to my Curve 8330 running version 4.3 of the BlackBerry software.

Also throw into the argument, if you use AIM, or any other similar service, there is no difference between using it to speak with somone anywhere in the world, see what happens if you sms someone from the US, say to europe, even with a message plan, you will be charged, and more then a few cents.
