It’s been a while since I used a WinMo device but, the Google Maps installation on my N95 has an option to use GPS or not. It sound like you may not have that enabled, if you even have that as an option.

For me, it made a noticeable difference in the amount of time it takes to acquire the satellite signals. Before the made the changes it would take about two minutes to lock on and longer if I was moving but, if I switched my phone to use the EDGE network, it would lock on quickly. I’m guessing that the EDGE towers transmitted their location already.
