Report: Sprint In Talks to Sell iDEN Network

im not really sure on this but I believe nextel was ordered by FCC to free up that spectrum. I think there were a couple of emergency units(fire depts) around the country that where getting cross frequencies from nextel causing delays in dispatching.

as I was a dedicated nextel customer, I was always impressed on the ptt technology nextel had. ATT came close with the infamous "chirp" but the latency of connect was not a selling feature by anymeans. Verizons is so bad that even some of my family members that work for them said it is a joke. sprints ready link sucked as well. I merely stated that nextel is becoming the past. everyone agrees that sprint got themselves into some trouble with the merge, but I think what they did is take the candy and now they are throwing the wrapper away. I feel that Sprints new Qchat has taken the ptt to the next level. side by side, I have vertually seen no huge differences between the two and now they have the high speed data. definitely a win-win for bus...

I do believe CDMA is the all-around best telephone network, but iDEN is the hands-down champ of PTT.

Sprint, my advice is forget about QChat and selling off iDEN, and make more, better Powersource handsets.

I absolutely agree with iden being the best. as I said I was a dedicated nextel customer and a big fan. unfortunately, everything is shifting to communicating through a data process and the good thing is that the ptt technology will follow into that advancement. but nextel will not be able to progress to that advancement. it is though at this point the leader.
I also agree with CDMA being the better network. technically GSM is the older technology although many would argue that. many had speculated that CDMA would be the world standard because of its ability to manage info better. but for some reason GSM became the standard. but either way, you are right. it does not matter what carrier or technology you have. there are going to be dropped...

Why has no one mentioned WiMAX? It will be out by the end of this year, and Sprint will have the build-out done by the time the rest of the carriers begin to release LTE; at least, that's the plan. WiMAX should be able to do PTT, and it should be better than QChat or DC. I hope Sprint sells iDEN to simplify their business model and roll out WiMAX quicker and more efficiently. 😁

the reason I didn't mention Wimax is because I think in general, most phone users currently are not aware of the impact WiMax is going to have on the communication industry. it is a huge advancement and will change the way we conduct any of our businesses. most people cannot accept the fact that Sprint is the one delivering the future. this is more power than anyone has seen in the wireless history.

I personally think that wimax is going to be a crock. In my area we still have not recieved power vision... and its been around for a good three years now..Wimax is going to start off big in large cities, but thats about it. I would have to go to Oklahoma City or Dallas just to get a wimax connection, just like I do power vision now.

first: where do you live?
second: is there a large enough population in the area between those two cities to support the need for deployment of powervision?
third: is clearwire offered in your area?
fourth: do Att and Verizon have it where you live.

Money is very tight for Sprint right now. so an answer to all these questions can better my response.
Wimax is not a crock. it is not only going to happen, it already has. it takes time to rollout this stuff and won't happen overnight. If Sprint were to tackle this on their own, it might have been a crock. but the mere fact that they have finacial backing from major companies, Sprint is in a position to use those funds towards WiMax which would stall rolling out anymore powervision. but ...

Besides Direct Talk, and the most robust system during large-scale emergencies, don't forget that Nextel's iDEN PTT also has NextMail and Direct Send, two great capabilities that I've been told are not in the cards for Qchat. Maybe a few years from now, but then maybe not at all.

Not that it's PTT related, but I have always appreciated that Nextel gives the user genuine, usable GPS in the phone. Most of the other carriers are YEARS behind the true GPS capabilities of Nextel.

Motorola also has additional capability developed a few years ago for iDEN that includes PTT Smart Messages, which allows you to PTT canned text messages that come with the phone, as well as allowing the user to compose their own short messages. Now THAT would be ...
