The main question should be why?

Why should this be illegal?

I feel that if anything, the airlines should just say "Hey this is not allowed."

Does it have to be such a horrible act as to justify it being a crime?

Are we so irresponsible as a nation that we cannot self regulate ourselves when it comes to such a trivial matter?

I don't understand why something like this needs to be written in law, it should just be a rule of the airlines. Next thing you know, they'll make it illegal to eat cheese. Then where will we be? That's right. A cheeseless, in-flight calling-less society ruled by robots and 90 year old senators. I for one welcome our new Blackberry overlords.

Exactly, I'm mixed on this whole thing, I really don't want people jabbering on the phone being annoying, but, I don't see a need for a federal law over this either.

Now, people say how is this different then in a mall or something, well its sorta hard to walk away from it at 30,000ft.

There are simpler and cheaper ways of handling such a situation though rather then paying congress to make a new law or buying a parachute. You could kindly let them know that the volume of the call is bothering you. If that does not work you can then get a flight attendant involved since he or she will not be able to ignore the flight attendant as easily. With it being a law I can just imagine them having to make an emergency landing so that the offender can be arrested 🤣
Personally I can think of 100 things more important that I would like the Congress working on instead of wasting time with this.

So what's next, banning people from talking to the person in the seat next to them? I don't understand what difference it makes. I have the -right- to talk. It should not matter if I am talking to the person in the seat next to me, or someone 3000 miles away.

In Us Gov 101... The First Amendment says you have the right to freedom of speech. 🤣 but its limited...

funny thing with this law its doesn't violate the Amendment as this is a safety measure thats been voluntary in place for years.take it to the supreme court... 👿

Congress has to step in if we want to guarantee that it is not allowed on any airline.

Right now all of the airlines ban cell phone calls, but they're not required to by law. Some of them could decide to allow it while others continued to ban it, so it might get confusing for consumers to remember whether or not they're allowed to make a call on a particular airline.

(I'm not advocating either way... just saying that this is one possible reason for needing a law.)

if the calls dont cause direct interfernce with the planes normal function, then what is the big deal?

you would think that by now cell phones wouldnt effect a plane and all its equipment.

and yea people can be annoying, but that is no reason to make it a law saying you cant talk on your phone on a plane. if it is a potential hazard, then ok. but it seems to be just cuz a bunch of old people got pissed cuz someone was talking beside them

i hate the fact that this country is run by a bunch of stupid, whiney, dumb old farts that cant accept change
