If in-flight calling is outlawed...

... only outlaws will have in-flight calling.

I'm sorry, this is ridiculous on a number of levels.

- It is technically feasible to provide in-flight cellular service through microcells, and it has been proven to not effect aircraft operations.

- In-flight calling is available today (using satellite) on many US airlines.

- EU countries have approved this service for flights within the EU.

- The likely cost of this service will severely limit the actual use.

It appears that the US government is trying to enforce etiquette and common sense. I can think of a number of places where cell phone use is more objectionable. Is the government going to ban cell phone use:

- By drivers in cars, vans and SUVs? There is a legitimate sa...

I find those far more annoying than someone having a reasonable conversation on an airplane.

What about banning these obnoxious behaviors on airplanes:

- Talking loudly with your family and friends. This is far more annoying than a reasonable phone call.

Reasonable is the keyword here and I hear unreasonable calls constantly. The majority of people for some odd reason feel it's necessary to yell the conversation on the phone. I can't imagine sitting next to someone and being forced (because I can't move unlike other environments) to listen to their conversation. As it is when I fly I put in ear plugs so I don't have to listen to what's already there. I guess if people in genera...

🙄

So because you don't have the courage to turn around and tell the guy with no sense volume to shut up, you think the government should waste time creating more laws?

Courage doesn't matter. If you get some a-hole who sits there and ignores you (which they will), what good is turning around and telling the guy to stop being so loud.

For me, they can't pass this law through quick enough. There are too many self-important a-holes out there that think they deserve to do what they want, where they want, and couldn't care less about the people around them.

That would be where you would tell a flight attendant, and if they mouthed off to a flight attendant it would be a tad more serious. It's a waste of time to ban cellphone calls, let's focus on something more important, and let common sense and airline policy dictate something that stupid. Hey, when you board an American Airlines flight have the flight attendant lay down the law, costs the airline company a extra minutes.

Wait, you realize you inadvertently included yourself in that description, right? Via extension of "what they want" you would want everyone to obey your viewpoint on the matter, no?
If there was a legitimate security or safety interest here, I could well understand a regulation of the sort. But being that you can still use your data services, this bill creates more risk by preventing anyone from overhearing a "suspicious" call. I mean what are ya gonna d...

Have you ever noticed that people on cell phones talk louder than people using regular wired telephones. There is a reason for this, it's called SIDE TONE. Without getting real technical, side tone is the ability of the person on the phone he or she is using to hear themselves talk. In the early days of telephony people shouted on phones all the time, it was discovered if a person could hear himself as he spoke, the shouting did not occur hence side tone was born. All wired phones have it, some more than others, there once was a standard but now that phones are produced all over the world, there are different sidetone standards.

Cell phones have very little sidetone, the reason is, cell phones are nothing but fancy duplex radios, prod...

i think it is really crazy the range of opinions on this issue... Bottom line this really is something SO TRIVIAL in contrast to all the other MAJOR issues that they merely DISCUSS in Washington, as well as the ones they flat out IGNORE. Honestly, this mirrors the issue brought about when one has a neighbor having a party and the police are called for disturbing the peace... its your neighbor, the party will end, and one day you'll have a party with live or loud music and hope that they have the decency not to call the police on you either. Its America people, at some point or another for a SHORT TIME we're all in situations where, being used to having our space, things get a little close, and someone will be doing something in that (now)...
