Sprint isn't going bankrupt or anything...but I guess my question is, what if TowerCo doesn't want to lease to Sprint anymore? Wouldn't they have the right not to since they would own the towers? I am sure Sprint has some 100-year agreement with the company to ensure that doesn't happen, but I really wonder the logic in all this. Why sell the one thing that is what your company runs off of?

Or maybe Sprint is having a tough time keeping up with maintainence. Does Verizon, AT&T, and T-Mobile own their towers?

Nevermind. I just read the press release. It looks like they are just putting tower management in the hands of someone else and there is indeed a long term agreement where TowerCo has to let Sprint use the towers.

But what does that mean for new towers? Does TowerCo have to build those or will Sprint build and sell...just seems very strange.

this is a shaky move by sprint... No longer having any control of the physical location could get very interesting, in a bad way.
It says they will turn around and lease them. And yes, this means Sprint is cash strapped. shaking head at sprint 🙄

I don't believe Verizon and AT&T own all their towers. Maybe this could mean a bigger in-home calling area since roaming could be eliminated. just a guess.

I agree with most everyone on this. We saw this today when we got in and I just laughed. They really are strapped for cash. I mean how can a company that is losing over a million customers a quarter make any money? This is a dangerous move for Sprint. Although most of the major carriers do not own ALL of their towers most of them don't just sell them all to try to make up for their depleting bank accounts. I guess this is a good way for Sprint to get a loan with no interest. Does anyone think the recent SK Telecom involvement has anything to do with this decision? One would wonder.....

sprint as a wireless phone company is evolving into the future. to do this , you have to take a step backward and relinquish dead weight. the future of voice calling is going to be done through data rather than two separate entities. the joining of clearwire and sprint with the backing of intel, google, comcast and even time warner to name a few is going to deploy Wimax very soon which will be several years ahead of everyone else and will end up being world wide. this is something that will arguably be a step forward for anyone wishing to stay aboard the sprint ship.

WiMax won't be several years ahead of everyone else, it will only be a couple.

And WiMax isn't as advanced as LTE, so while Sprint will gain a couple of years of advantage they will be behind as soon as the LTE networks launch.

I can understand the reasoning both ways, but going WiMax seems like a pretty big risk to me. In a way, it seems like a desperation move.

The difference is that WIMAX exists and LTE does not. More European vaporware. They promised worldwide UMTS by the end of 2001 in 1998. It did not even roll out anywhere until 2004 and with way less capabilities than promised.
They have zero credibility with any timetable or list of capabilities. They have screwed it up way too often. Yes WIMAX will have a huge head start over LTE since we don't know when or if it will actually be deployed.
The products have been stable but have not been the best use of bandwidth.

Most companies are going with LTE. And LTE will be doployed more long term than Wimax. Sprint is the only US major carrier that is going with Wimax. Tmobile, Verizon, Cingular, and Alltel are going the LTE route. Not to mention many of the european carriers are going with LTE also. So LTE will be larger the Wimax in the longrun.

Leasing is never a good idea. Of couse there not a cell carrier but ask KMART how the leasing thing worked out for them

...on the recent markets that VZW is going to dump.

Sprint could be thinking about buying customers back.

that was my first thought when i read this story.
Sprint's now looking at getting home coverage into some of those markets that alltel/VZW has to divest, but I'm sure the Evil Empire would rather spin-off or sell those into a regional or rural carrier
