Divest areas where it will get coverage from Alltel? Doesnt make sense. Will they create a new carrier in those rural areas?
...
It means verizon agrees to sell of some of it's current network in areas where they overlap with alltel currently to other carriers. It makes plenty of sense verizon will sell to carriers in the rual markets so they can take advantage to alltels network which makes up for verizons dead areas
...
If I'm not mistaken, the customers must stay attached to the network they are on. For example, if Verizon sells the current Verizon network and customer base in the divested areas to AT&T...it would be pretty confusing to consumers that Verizon Wireless is now AT&T and Alltel is now Verizon Wireless. It would open up a can of worms for customers of all involved carriers to suddenly have a change in coverage based on asset sale agreements. For many customers, this could be material.
...
I think AT&T is the last choice Verizon would make when choosing who to sell its assets to.
...
verizon might not have a choice.... who else might want the alltell GSM holdings....but as far as the customers and CDMA i agree...
...
I am still having a hard time understanding what all of this means.
Here is my situation. I live in Eastern North Carolina. I have Alltel because I tried AT&T and it was no good. I used to have Verizon but they were spotty as well when I first moved out there.
Does this mean that if I stay with Verizon that I may not have the great service that Alltel has provided?
By saying that they will be giving up areas where the networks overlap, does that mean I will still have coverage because Verizon will be keeping either the Alltel or Verizon coverage out here?
Sorry I do not know very much about this kind of stuff.
If someone could explain what this could mean for a current Alltel customer who lives in an area where Alltel...

well kinda of
if you switch to verizon now and your market is not accuired you will get coverage like "old verizon" if they sell it who ever buys it will have alltel's coverage. If verizon gets to buy it as part of the merger then your coverage will become verizon and they will encorporate towers and coverage of the old alltel network.
hope that helps
...
looking farther into the only listed market on the verizon list for NC is RSA 5
i am not for sure but in little internet reasurch it looks like it is anson county nc only....so it looks like if it is approved you will be verizon
...
Ok here it goes
Verizon will suffer Divestitures or Selling of markets (Alltel's not theirs) in order to gain an approval by the DOJ.
Verizon perposes 82 Markets MSA not REGIONS
Those Effected:
Alltel Customer within 82 Divested Markets: Will be then sold to another carrier individually or packaged...
Alltel Customer outside 82 Divested markets: wont be effected will become verizon wireless customers untill end of existing contract then they may switch....
If the DOJ approves this agreement with the Roaming Agreement changes (they might i say prob tighter rules will be put on the deal) then the FCC approves the same and then it will happen.
Hope that Helps!!

Some of the likely Carriers that might purchase
Northeast: Metro PCS
...
Wow I hate this keyboard....
Metro PCS (pre paid company)
Cricket (pre paid company)
At&t (network incompatable)
US Cellular
Sprint
Depends on the area of the country and price weather who will want them but im sure it will be interesting.
...
Alltel has a significant amount of gsm coverage in the midwest and areas north and west of there. I'm sure at&t would be very interested in getting those areas.
...
they have gsm towers they use for roaming fee's to the gsm carriers.
...
Although no Michigan markets have yet been listed, I think it would be hilarious if Leap Wireless bought back the market it sold to VZW.
...
i'd look at iPCS to be buying the Michigan markets
...
Sprint might want to jump on buying some of those markets. They should have years ago, but at least this will get Sprint more customers and a little more coverage.
...
Sprint should do alot of things. I think their first priority should be looking at why they are losing a million customers ever quarter. They really dont have the money to get too involved in something like this.
...
Well with the sale of their towers for 600 million this might give them the rights to play at a few select markets. Sprint in my opinion needs to learn how to stop the leg that has been cut off from bleeding them dry before trying to add more.
